I'm thinking of working abroad.

These past few days made me think, "What if I work abroad?" I'm sure I'll get a salary higher than my salary here. A compensation that I cannot reach even until I retire if I stay in my current job. That is because promotion in a government agency is very very very slow. I have colleagues who worked for 15 years and more and has not experienced any promotion! And I think to myself, I cannot stay that long in that same situation. I must make a time frame. I already applied for a promotion in my agency and if I get it within next year, then I'll stay in the Philippines but if there is no news then I'll pursue working abroad. So now, I have to develop my skills to prepare myself.

Working abroad means that you have to separate from your family. It still depends on whether it is worth as it is hard to leave them and work alone in a foreign country. You also don't have friends there and it is not easy.

@renicemae You have a point there but still you have personal expenses while staying in other countries like place to stay, daily basic needs and I`m sure you still need to go out somewhere to break loneliness

Yup. but when I work abroad, even if I dont get a promotion there..it is still okay since the value of money is higher than my country. In that way, I can save up money and sustain my families needs.

@renicemae Good for you. I think by venturing abroad you'll challenge yourself, get out of your comfort zone. Who knows, it may be very beneficial to you!

I do understand this. Working in a Government is really complicated. You need to get attached to those people who have a good background from Bosses. It will help you get the promotions you like.

Yup. But I dont like the nature of getting promoted because you i know someone. I want to get promoted because I deserve it and that Im capable of doing the job.

Working abroad does mean higher salary - but your expenses will be equally high. You have to consider the cost of living abroad in relation to the potential salary that you will receive. The thing about the mind-set about working abroad is all about the income. Earning something in a foreign currency which will be much higher when converted to pesos. But the reality is the expenses abroad will not be in pesos.

@renicemae Yes, that is advisable. But having a higher salary abroad would warrant certain hard to seek qualifications, or experience working there to their standards. For someone who is just starting, this could be tricky and hard. I am not saying this to discourage you, but merely providing more information or you as I have been there and done that. Hope this helps!

True. That is why I am also considering that if I work abroad, my salary should be higher than the minimum wage of that country.

@Raine38 Yes I know that there is high standards and qualifications for high paying jobs in other countries that is why I am practicing and developing my technical skills now in preparation to whatever my decision will be.

Working abroad is okay but working close to family is better. Imagine yourself 30 years from now thinking of your past. Spending 25 years abroad and 5 years with family before you die? Or spending 30 years earning small but together with your family? Money can blind us what is important the most. Before we die, did we spend much of our time with our family? Or we'll close the curtain with regrets?

I understand you because I think about that too. I'll work abroad with my husband and together we'll make a family hopefully while still in other country. And when enough money is saved, maybe we'll come back and put up business or whatsoever.
