After looking up Richard's obitaury I did a search for the other halfs granny. She raised him and they were fairly close until a few years ago. They hadn't talked in a couple of years, as none of his family will have anything to do with him but that is besides the point. I looked her up to see if she was still alive and was kind of surprised to see that she had died earlier this year. I won't mention her name because those are the details that the world wide web doesn't need to know. But she did pass in February, and now I'm trying to decide if I should tell the other half or not.

That is a shame that you had to find out about his granny by searching the internet. Regardless of the fact that family doesn't talk to one another for whatever reason, I do think that when something like that happens in the family that someone should let everyone know, regardless of what kind of hard feelings that there might be.

The situation is complicated. So it probably does seem weird. I'll give it some more thought.

I´d tell him. There´s no harm in doing it.

I would let him know. I have learned of some of my partner's family members passing before he did, and I always tell him.
