Diary Tuesday 21st November 2017 My first day on the temporary post office job. Getting up at 4.30 am was easy enough, Stepping out into the dark and rain was tougher. I had a two bus journey to work, arriving about three quarters of an hour before my shift started. Any later buses would have made me late. Having worked for the post office last year it was something of a reunion with a few other returning temps. I was mainly working with small parcels, sorting them by post code area, easy work, but lots of it so very repetitive. I was very tired by the time I finished, and caught up on my sleep upon arriving home. Diary Wednesday 22nd November 2017 Much as yesterday, with even worse rain. I was given almost exclusive control of a sorting frame for much of the morning, with a few other staff joining me later in the shift, as other work was running low. We were warned that we might be laid off on some days due to limited work, and I was told that while in as normal on Friday this week I am now off tomorrow (Thursday) and Saturday, though I was later invited to do overtime on the Saturday (overtime on a day when normal shifts ae cancelled). I declined the invitation. I won’t know my next week shifts until Friday. I got some shopping in on my way home. I have to remember not to set the alarm to stupid o’clock in the morning now. Lots of memories come flooding back seeing that Red Post Office Box there. There was one at both ends of the street as it was a long street. Sorry you have to travel so far and get up so early to get to work.

@arthurchappell I wondered that often if the Post Boxes were being done away with as they are part of our heritage like a landmark that will stick there forever at least in my mind. I had been temping for a long time in the West Midlands area and I was catching up to three buses just to get there and the others to get back and I had to be out really early so I did not miss them. I wish they had the Postman over here like in England but they don´t not as such. Have a lovely day ahead and hope its not too cold or rainy where you are at work.

@lovinangelsinstead21 they have reduced the number of post boxes in Britain to save money paying to have staff collect mail

Their schedules look a bit odd. Why to cancel normal schedule and then to ask overtime on Saturday? Very strange.

@arthurchappell Unfortunately this is how the system works, or better does not work.

They sound very disorganised - cancelling work, then asking people to do overtime. That is a very early start for you, and a pain that you have to either get there 45 minutes early or be late.

Glad you managed to get this work once more, even if it is unsocial and variable hours.

Having done the work before I guess it's not too stressful getting back into it. I guess you only get paid for the hours you do?

@arthurchappell The whole welfare system there sounds horrendous. I'm not sure that it's quite as bad here but I do know our son had to jump through a lot of hoops when he was on the dole for a while.

Good that you have this temp job again. My grandson has to get out to the bus earlier starting next week. Ugh! Not a morning person.

Having to take the bus to work can be a drag. You have to leave so early just to get there on time.

@Kandae11 sadly not as the late shift and night shift options would cause me public transport problems
