My 10th choice about songs featuring the word ‘kangaroo’ in the title or lyrics is Peter Allen’s Tenterfield Traveller. Allen’s real name was Peter Richard Woolnough and he was born in Tenterfield, New South Wales, Australia. The song tells the story of his grandfather, George Woolnough, who had the saddler’s shop in the small town. Allen’s father was a violent alcoholic who shot himself after returning from the Second World War, an incident from which George never recovered. Peter was only young at the time but it must surely have had an impact on him. An extension of the Tenterfield library was named the ‘George Woolnough Wing’ in 2005. Peter Allen married Liza Minnelli in 1967 but they divorced in 1974, with Peter then acknowledging his homosexuality and living the remainder of his life with Gregory Connell. Connell died in 1984 from an AIDS-related illness and Allen died in 1992 from AIDS-related throat cancer His ashes were scattered at sea. I like knowing the background to a song as it can help explain lyrics which might otherwise be hard to comprehend. The photo is one I always call ‘breakfast in bed’ and was taken just a short distance from our kitchen window.
Wonderful song, wonderful man if you want other songs posted just leave a comment!!!

I recall Peter Allen well from his US and Liza days here.

He was a pretty big name for a while. I think he had a one-man show and many years later Hugh Jackman played him on stage.

I remember seeing him on talk shows and stuff when I was a kid. I had never heard this one as far as I know, though.

Gosh, I had no idea he would be of a 'past era' as it were. He was a big star at one time. Being married to Liza Minnelli for a while promoted his name too.

I like such songs with the background to the song. Some songs that I know of have no background at all. I also like songs telling about real life that common people experience day by day.

Once you know the background to a song it can become much more meaningful.

I'm interested to know if you've heard of Peter Allen at all? Perhaps he is another Australian who isn't well-known overseas although he lived in the US.

Ha, ha, love the 'breakfast in bed' title! Interesting research. How are kangaroos mentioned in Peter Allen's song?

It is strange that people who are high profile in Australia and that I think would be in the US aren't at all. I did think Peter Allen would be one that people knew.

Well, I don't think the baby needs much sympathy. It seems pretty happy.

Is that the same little one you showed in a picture. It looks like he's still in the pouch, and that is so cool. Sorry, I keep telling you that.

@JudyEv I'm sorry I haven't spoke of your kangaroo songs, but I don't know any of them, and your pictures are so cute.

I thought he would have been one that was perhaps known more internationally but it seems not.
