Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely

Another leader, who had commanded much popularity and promised much, has been forced to resign amid much celebration. Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe was shown the door after he wanted to ensure that his much younger wife succeeded him. That would not have been far away as he was already 93. A repeat of the usual dream of the masses, hoping for better times, getting shattered following the maxim “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. From my observation, and having lived in few countries with different political systems, I can say that one person can make a big difference. Once a leader gets entrenched in power he/she can cause enormous change for the better or worse. Many generations have to carry the can for the follies of one person whatever be the political system. The damage is well and truly done and beyond immediate repair if they are unlucky to back the wrong horse! Can the people do anything about it other than just bear the consequence of promises dashed by a leader? In a way it is like a life partner showing his/her truly colors once the deal is done! Hoping against hope and then time to act but for some it is endless misery for no fault of theirs. Do cherish the good times! Image: From Wikipedia Commons

It's a shame that mankind is prone to be greedy and power hungry. Some times I wonder if there is any hope for us as humans, but then there are so many selfless good people in the world that it gives me hope.

Because of the goodness of the vast majority and their willingness to overlook and pardon the guilty we are pulling on. These types of leaders create misery all around. They should never forget they got to power promising much but then greed took over - siva

I don't think Zimbabwe is out of the woods yet as the sacked vice-president doesn't seem to be a good man either.

Yes, he was hand in glove with Mugabe till he was eased out to make way for his wife. He was a willing hatchet man to do the bidding of Mugabe - siva

Absolute power makes people power drunk, same story of rulers, monarchs and dictators throughout the history of mankind

Most succumb to human weakness. Instead of elevating their thinking for having been given the responsibility to guide the destiny of the masses, most become selfish and yield to temptations and greed. Though leaders are still human, they are expected not to forget and ditch the countrymen who repose their faith in them - siva

The clenched fist might open some doors, but it more often closes them!
"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." Abraham Lincoln, (1809 to 1865) the former American President said this. Any tyrant can wield power then, but it takes love to build a character, who is loved for who he is, not hated for the power that he wields.

Very meaningful words indeed. It is a pity even the supposed most loving fall prey to greed once they ascend to power and preside over the destiny of their countrymen - siva
