Tossed the Stuffing and Other Tales from Thanksgiving

I had to work on Thanksgiving day. However, I only had one client and was home by 10:20 that morning. Once I got home I went into Betty Crocker mode and started to prepare our meal. The turkey had thawed, all but the ball of ice that was in the cavity. I pulled out the neck and bag of giblets and then proceeded to start the stuffing. Usually I am the only one in the house when I start preparing a big meal. My daughter had come over early to watch Little Miss while I worked. We were talking while I worked diligently in the kitchen. Everything was seemingly going well. I had opted to use stuffing bread, which is just a loaf of stale bread. Years ago I would save the crusts of a loaf of bread and place them on a rack to dry. Or I would take a loaf of stale bread and place them in the oven and toast them up crisp. Add sauteed onion, celery, garlic, melted butter, chicken broth, Bell's Poultry Seasoning, salt and pepper, and 1 egg. Then stuff the bird! I only have stuffing twice a year. So, I really look forward to having it with our holiday meals! Well, I guess I shouldn't have stuck with buying a box of Bell's Stuffing Mix and doctored it up. The stuffing was too moist and was terrible. It didn't get served for dinner. Yeah, I was super disappointed. I tossed it in the trash. Everything else turned out great. I had sent my daughter to the store earlier to pick up a pumpkin pie. Paid a small fortune for it! My husband would have gone into shock if he didn't get dessert! The girls left shortly after dinner was done. I hadn't even cleaned up after the meal before they headed out. Another disappointment! Hubby and Little Miss wanted pumpkin pie. It didn't appeal to my eye, but took a taste of it and confirmed that it wasn't worthy of my having a slice. Little Miss took a sliver and hubby took nearly half of the pie! I had a slice of the Mrs. Smith's berry pie, which by the way was quite good and I highly recommend it. The dishes were stacked in the sink and on the countertop. Got them ready to do for the next day. No way was I in the mood to do a sinkful of dishes. I did a few, and headed for my lazy chair to relax with the hubby and Little Miss. Now my thoughts go to planning out our Christmas festivities. Hopefully we will venture out to get our tree next weekend. Little Miss is buzzing with excitement over getting a tree. I too can't wait. Hope your days are sunny and your hearts filled with joy. Don't sweat the small stuff. I try not to.

I'm usually the only one who eats stuffing in my family. I need it moist as I really hate stuffing and it took a lot of failed attempts to find a way to make it that would appeal to me. My sister sent home a container of stuffing. I heated it in the microwave for last night's feast. It wasn't touched. It went down the garbage disposal. I didn't make stuffing this year because it's not on my diet, which I'm sticking to like crazy glue.

You have more willpower than I! If I had stuffing I would eat it.

@just4him I don't care for a dry dressing, or a dressing that is like a rubber ball, or like the one I tossed out. I'll stick to my tried and true method next time so I'll get my stuffing fix.

@ElusiveButterfly I really don't get the stuffing thing. I've tasted so many stuffings in my day, and they were so dry, they stuck to the roof of my mouth as bad as peanut butter, I hate that too, and praise God I'm allergic to it, so I don't need to bother with it. I found a way to make it moist - I add apples.

The important is that you enjoyed your Thanksgiving and the food was good, despite the stuffing.

My children kept saying not to fret over the stuffing. I am a perfectionist and was really beating myself up because of the wasted food. The day was good though, despite the food fiasco.

@ElusiveButterfly It was not a total food fiasco, but I understand, because I am also a food perfectionist.

If the stuffing was too moist, why didn't you put it in a pan and put it under the broiler?

The stuffing was more like a bread pudding when it was fully cooked. It was a nasty texture.

What a bummer that the stuffing didn't turn out well and had to be tossed. It must have been disappointing to have your girls eat and run like that. Sounds like your hubby eats pie like my family does. They think a pie only serves 4 people, so if they have two pieces, then they're essentially eating half a pie. I have seen the oldest of my brothers eat a large serving of pie like that on many occasions.

He didn't eat as much turkey. He isn't a huge fan of poultry. Had I made a ham too, he would have eaten a large portion of that.

@ElusiveButterfly I used to prefer turkey to ham when I was younger; now it's the opposite. I'm not a big fan of turkey these days either.

@Srbageldog I do like roasted chicken a bit more than Turkey.

Stuffing is one of my favorites at Thanksgiving and I would be so disappointed if it didn't come out right. Sorry you had to throw yours in the trash. I"m excited for Christmas too and can't wait to put our tree up. Children certainly do make the holidays happy

I plan on making it another day when I roast a chicken. I have doctored up a box of Stove Top stuffing to get it almost just right.
