So Much to Learn About Roses

I have a few rose bushes in my garden. They produce magnificent blooms, but sadly their leaves never look as healthy as they should. I could blame our sub-standard soil, but you've probably guessed, it's because I don't care for them as well as I should. Yesterday two friends and I went to the local rose show. The exhibition was amazing. I'd never realized there were not only so many colours, but also so many rose types such single stem, long stem, short stem, climbing and many others I've forgotten since I came home. The entire hall was filled with vibrant coloured blooms and displays that left me in awe when realising the time growers must have spent bringing these roses to perfection for rose show day. Not only were the blooms pictures of perfection, but the leaves oozed green healthiness. Proud rose producers filled the room, discussing the prize-winning blooms’ merits and complimenting each other on their displays. While I love my roses, I doubt I'll ever consider rose growing a serious way to spend my time. I confess, however, I learned a few things while at the rose show and had my curiosity aroused enough to come home and look up snippets of information online. Roses definitely make a serious contribution to many lives, but there’s so much to learn about them. I'm happy to stay at my present ability level when it comes to growing these beautiful flowers. The image above is not mine, but one found on Pixabay.

I love roses and at one time had more than 40 of them mostly old garden varieties. They are endlessly fascinating. I only have a few left since I got too busy to care for them properly.

They definitely do appear to take a lot of time and commitment. Mine grow happily without my attention, though I'm better now than I was.

Our friends have about 300 rose bushes and exhibit at shows. The main problem at the moment is that parrots keep nipping off the buds. They don't eat the flowers or bushes but persist in nipping off the buds.

That would be so infuriating! After reading Dianne's comment about deer eating hers I wondered if you were going to tell me it is 'roos with you.

@valmnz We have our four rose bushes surrounded by netting because the roos love roses. Our friends have a roo- and rabbit-proof fence round their 5 acres but unfortunately it's not parrot-proof. In the photo you might be able to see the netting to the right and a few leaves of a rose in amongst the wild oats.

@JudyEv isn't it silly how those of us in the rest of the world adore your creatures, while they are such pests for you.

I love roses, but not all roses. My favorite are the small climbing roses that have a great smell. They are not difficult to grow and forgive humans mistakes.

Mine are very forgiving Anna, not just of this human being, but also the stony soil they need to grow in.

@valmnz Some of my roses grew up without even I planted them. They really wanted to be there.

@valmnz The park near our house has a rose show every June and the plants are truly magnificent. The drawback to that is that for week the cars are backed up all the way to our house from the park.

Do you grow roses? And, even more interesting, do you still grow garlic?

@valmnz Haven't grown garlic for a couple of years - it keeps slipping my mind at the right time for planting. Zucchini are my current thing.

When I purchased a rose bush late this fall, a woman stopped me and told me to add coffee grounds to the bottom of the hole that I dug for the bush. Well, I have yet to do this. It is still in the original pot. I did put coffee grounds on the pile of soil that I have to put in our garden. I'll take from that area when I plant the bush. I have never been successful in growing roses. I did have one bush that lived for 3 years. It had a few blooms on it, but never really blossomed fully.

I love roses but they don't grow well in my place because of the weather. Rose plant needs a moderate climate to do well. I have a few button rose plants that are doing well but the other varieties that I have just survive ..

Such an information about roses and its nice to know. I have one plant rose here, a variegated one, I think I'm not giving proper importance to the plant, maybe I should have.

Garden and flower shows are so much fun and you can learn a lot, even if it is just that you need to learn more, or that you are happy where you are.
