Had a great time at the silly family auction

The party was at 1. It was held in their beautifully decorated garage. There was a table a long the wall with food and then two rows of tables running down the length of the room and two smaller tables running the opposite way. It was so crowded that once you scooted into a seat it was nearly impossible to get back out. Dinner was served first then the tables were cleared off and the gifts were all set on one table. On a large pinup board on the wall was months of the year. Each person wrote the day and month of their birthday on a piece of paper and stuck it under the month spot on the board. The months were drawn out of a hat then they went down the days in order of whose came first that month. The person called went up and chose any present to unwrap and show everyone then placed it on the second table. Anyone after that whose birthday was called could chose to steal that present or pick a new one. If you opened a present and someone liked it and stole it on their turn then the original gift opener got to pick another present. When my sons turn came he was to nervous so his sister picked his. It was a nice fuzzy hunting theme blanket he was hoping someone would steal. It was stolen and when his bday got called a second time he got braver and went up to make a choice. He chose the largest box that everyone was very curious and coaxing people into opening it. It wound up being a log carved up with screws for teeth, marbles for eyes, crazy black straw witch looking hair and a cowboy hat. Complete with a spiky wooden goatee. This was a site to see trust me lol. My son walked away crying. I laughed so hard I couldn’t help it. My daughter whose very artsy loved it and is keeping this hideous thing in her room. The photo I added here is of the gifts I won.

It was fun but very different then how things were at the last auctions where there was some sort of bidding.

It was fun and the food was yummy as well as nice to visit with people. The slippers are child size so I am going to give them to my friend for her daughter. Some of the things we got I will donate as well.

I don’t usually like knee highs but they can be great for things like shoveling where I want more to cover me to stay warm. I already have a few pair I don’t wear so I may make a craft from these or donate them.

Sounds like a really fun time! I am sorry your son was disappointed, but it is good your daughter will be keeping the, can I say "odd log?" Your gifts are lovely and some of them will keep you nice and warm. :)

My daughter is artsy and appreciates this ugly log face but lol once she is done with it I have no clue what I will do with it. I think I could sneak out to my boyfriends house and pose it outside his bedroom window lol

It was all for fun. Most people got things they likely didn't want like my father in law getting little kids crocodile slippers. I will be donating and giving friends the things we won't use.

Wow sounds like a fun auction minus your son crying. Did he end up trading with his sister (gift wise) or your sister got his gift + hers.

His sister was allowed to open another package for him while he was crying. It was an empty Hershey's Candy tin. People collect them but we don't so I put it in a bag of things to donate.

The slippers are a tad to small so I am going to give them to my friends daughter. The candle holder and gloves I gave to my daughter. The coasters are from the 60s. I will see if my boyfriend wants them.

He cries pretty easy. He was worried something like that would happen so he didn’t want to go to begin with but it’s all for fun and he needs to learn to deal with disappointment.

@FayeHazel It was kind of odd how it was done. All the bags were rather girly and men wound up with things for kids or women etc.

There were so many packages to choose from. Almost all of them were in gift bags. I chose my packages based on what bags I liked. I love the ear wrap it will be put to good use when I shovel the snow in the winter.

Oh I love this gift giving game. We did it once at an employee party and it was hysterical. No kids though because kids tend to not understand. I've tried to get my family to do this but the old man ALWAYS vetoes the idea despite EVERYONE else wanting to do it.

That stinks maybe you can just do it and leave the old man out if he doesn’t want to do it. It might be really fun for everyone else.
