Why design and make teddy bears and other stuffed animals?

I have been asked many times "why" did you decide to design and make teddy bears? It started with the story of how the bear came to being. It started when then President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shot a tiny baby bear cub that the leader of the hunt I expedition had caught and tied to a tree. Of course it made the news papers in the form of a comic. Soon it became a soft cuddly toy for children to snuggle with. As the years went by the value of some of the bears were reaching hundreds of dollars. I felt it was obscene and I started making them with only one thing in mind, and that was to keep the pricing down where working people could afford them. I've been pretty successful in doing that, plus I've enjoyed the smiles that I have been able to bring to a joy of people's lives and smiles to their faces. I may never make a lot of money making teddy bears, but I make a lot better income than money...it's the smiles on people's faces, the hugs that I receive, and the joy that a simple fuzzy object brings to someone having a bad day- money can NEVER buy those great feelings. That's WHY I started making teddy bears! I did some research this morning and it stated that President Roosevelt refused to shoot an old bear that had been tied to a tree. There are several different stories about the hunting trip. I posted one site a little further down the discussion.

As soon as I get some more made. I lost everything in a recent fire that took my home. The picture that s my ID picture here on the lot is one of my bears. I had given it to a friend and she very generously gave it back to me after the fire....it has seen a LOT of hugs and even more tears, but that's what teddy bears are for!

Because of the living situation I'm in right now, I've made a decision to go from making bears that are eight to twenty four inches tall to "miniature" bears that are from two to five inches tall and are hand sewn. The main reason for going to making a smallpox bear is that living with someone limits the space you have both to store the materials for making the bears but it also limits the room you have available to work in. By making small bears I can work in an area about three square feet and store the materials and the tools in that area too. Plus I can take my work with me. I took the lion I was working on during our trip. I finished him on the trip too, which is something I couldn't do with a bigger bear. I'll post pictures tomorrow. Hugs Toni

All I know it all started when former President Theodore Roosevelt had killed a bear.

Actually he refused to kill a old bear. He was an avid sportsman and environmentalist. It all started when Clifford Berryman had done a political cartoon about President Roosevelt refusing to shoot the bear while on a hunting trip in Mississippi it was widely published. This information comes from

A long time ago I promised to give people love and have a good heart. Nothing is gained by giving pain to others except teaching yourself how to give more and deeper pain to others. My brother gave me the worst pain imaginable, and through that pain I learned how to give love, joy , and happiness to others. By making bears I can both sell an item that brings joy to others, and I can also give joy and happiness to others through my craft. I am so thankful God gave me the talents he did and the heart to share them with others.

We would appreciate it if you could show us step-by-step how you make your teddy bears. Did you learn it by yourself? If you did, you are artistic. I learned how to draw and paint by myself. Here is one of my paintings.
