As some of you know, my 43 year old daughter and Aubrey, our five year old grand-daughter are taking horseback riding lessons. This is their mother-daughter time together, that both of them really love doing. A while back, their trainer Erin brought a new horse into the stable, where they attend classes. Everyone was observing this beautiful animal and admiring how sleek and gentle her personality is. A few had taken her around the ring, to experience the wonderful obedience of this horse. Finally Erin spoke to Mari Lyn and offered her a chance to take a turn. My daughter mounted the horse, but they didn't adjust the stirrups, to fit her properly. There was a shallow hole in the middle of the ring, which they thought the horse would step over. Instead, she did a jump over this hole and my daughter plummeted to the ground! Mari Lyn was obviously injured, because she couldn't get up. They arranged to get her into the E.R. of a nearby hospital, for a thorough once over by a doctor. It ended up that my daughter was definitely hurting all over from this fall, but only had a broken middle finger, on her one hand. I thank God, her back wasn't broken. even though it hurts badly. Every day, Mari Lyn is doing a little bit better! Photo: Trainer Erin and Aubrey. Sorry I don't have a photo of Mari Lyn on a horse.

What Erin didn't take into consideration, this use to be a race horse. After its' racing days are over, these animals are sold at a very reasonable price. Nobody actually had any idea, what this horse had been trained to do! My daughter is a new rider, she has never done any jumping before:( Thank God, her back wasn't broken, from this fall!

Omg! When did this happen? I'm glad to hear she didn't hurt herself worse than she did. My mother was thrown from a horse when she was a teenager and feared them for the rest of her life. I hope your daughter gets back in the saddle when she heals. Hubby and I love to ride horses, so we will be more careful now. Wishing Mari Lyn a speedy recovery.

This was a retired race horse, that was trained to do different things. Mari Lyn is a relatively new rider, so she didn't expect it to be any different. They had no idea this horse would leap over the hole, instead of just stepping over it. This accident frighten her, but she has already decided, to continue with these lessons:)
thank goodness it was just her finger. one can't help remembering christopher reeves when one hears or reads about a fall from a horse. i guess it will be awkward for a while for her if it's the middle finger of her dominant hand.
