I am Really Concerned and a Little Disturbed

United States

Last night I left my phone in my bedroom after I got Little Miss down for the night. I usually bring it with me if I am going to stay up. It is odd that I somehow managed to stay awake so I could watch "This is US." After watching the show I headed to hug my pillow. I plugged my phone in to charge it and found a message from my brother. Mom has had shingles for about a month now. The rash is spreading. The message contained a photo of the area where she has shingles. It was inflamed, red, and looked very sore. He also said her arm was a bit swollen. This really concerns me because I am not sure that the nursing home took proper care of Mom's condition. What disturbed me most was the fact that when my brother and his wife arrived to visit Mom, they found her in the dining area with the doctor who was examining her right there. There are windows to the outside and the side corridor of this room. Why didn't he bring her into an area where there was more privacy? I am flipping furious. Why my brother and his wife didn't address this issue is beyond me. They did say he seemed genuinely concerned over her condition though and was prescribing her an anti-viral med. Well, why in the heck didn't this happen before now? I didn't sleep well last night because of not only this, but the fact that Little Miss had a rough night. She was coughing most of the night and her sleep was fretful. So, I am off to face another day without a good night's rest to get me through the day. I am making a call to the nursing home today to voice my concerns. Little Miss had an appointment with an ENT on Friday. Hopefully we can find out what course of action to take with her as well.

That is terrible. She should have been given the shingles shot. The poor woman she must be just miserable.

I can't imagine how much she has suffered. I have read if she was given an anti-viral medication with the first 72 hours it would have helped her. We reported the first blister to the head nurse at her care plan meeting. I doubt that they did anything at that time.

@Happy2BeMe I thought it would be. Perhaps they just brushed it off as something else.

@ElusiveButterfly That is ridiculous. It should have been taken care of as soon as it was reported.

That is not the way to examine anyone in such a public place. I'd be angry too. I'm sorry you didn't get a good night's sleep.

I will muddle through the day somehow. Just can't get the image of that doctor examining Mom in such a public area.

@just4him I doubt I'll get it out of my head even after addressing the issue. Makes you wonder what other idiot moves they are making there.

Sorry about your mothers being examined in the dining area I also can`t understand why they did that? Anyways, I hope you`re ok now and those nursing homes had addressed your concerns

It surprised me that my brother didn't question why he didn't bring her to her room for examination.

They should have examined her in a private area, that's so violating the way they did things. I hope Little Miss and your mom feel better soon.

My brother asked what was going on when he walked into the dining area. However, I would have gone a step further and requested that she be brought to her room for examination. I am so upset over this. Little Miss has an appointment on Friday with an ENT and I am hoping they have some quick solutions to her problem. She was in pain last night and that worries me too. Made me cry to think that all I could do was administer ibuprofen and hope that it would help ease her pain. She slept well and is still sleeping.

Do call the nursing home! It's not too much to ask to move a patient away from windows.

@ElusiveButterfly It doesn't matter if the area was empty. Someone could have come.

I hope you can voice your concerns and that your mother begins healing with treatment. That's awful! Sorry you and Little Miss had such a rotten night.

Little Miss was in pain last night. She told me that her neck hurt. I gave her some ibuprofen to ease the pain. It helped her sleep better.

Sorry that happened to your mother. There should be practices in place. Have you phoned to enquire yet? It's so important to get your proper sleep.

I didn't have time yesterday to call and got home later than expected. Hoping to get 5 minutes today. I did sleep better last night though. Had to go to bed earlier to make sure I got a better night of rest.

From my understanding Shingles are horrible, my elderly Aunt got them along her back. Hope they can help her. Little Miss is still sick?

The pain from shingles is terrible. I have known quite a few that have suffered from them. Little Miss has swollen tonsils and they are causing her to be in pain. Last night was the first time she has voiced to me that she was hurting. I gave her ibuprofen for the pain.

Playing devil's advocate here: If the rash was on her arm, it would have been apparent to everyone anyway. Or maybe your mother cornerd the doctor and just showed it to him right there. As for why nothing was done previously, maybe your mother didn't mention it to anyone in authority before this.

My mother has Alzheimer's. We noticed the first blister and reported it to the head nurse when we had a meeting. She wrote down the information.

My husband had a small rash for a few days and became very pale and the spot was painful. They gave him an ointment to put on but I don't know if they gave him anything by mouth. He was only 22 or so. Your poor mother having it so long must be awful :( I hope now she will start to improve.

She is in a lot of pain. I know of the topical applications that they can give. Not sure they are using them. I have a lot of questions that need to be answered.

I am also surprised why they examined your mother in the dining area. It's strange. I am also suffering from cough and cold from last 4-5 days and on medication.

I hope they already gave her antiviral medicines and covered the area to avoid the spread of the blisters. I have no confidence at all in this doctor, shingles are contagious and he examines your mother in the dining area? This is crazy.

The first doctor that she had seemed to be great. She left the facility. I haven't met this doctor. It was the first time my brother had met him. I would have let him have it both barrels if it had been me walking in on that fiasco.

I'm so sorry to hear this. That is just awful. The stuff that goes on in most care homes is unbelievable. Being examined by a doctor in the dining area?? What the hell?

Wow you have a lot to deal with. That was not right that the doctor did not examine her in some private place and not out in the open for all to see. Take care and I hope Little Miss will be ok. Take care of yourself so you do not get sick too.

I am trying to keep myself rested and eating healthy foods to keep myself going. Little Miss is being treated for swollen tonsils and has to take prednisone for 6 days. Hoping that does the trick.

@Hannihar the doc said they are not going to take them out at this time. If the steroid doesn't work, they will refer her to another medical facility that specializes in pediatric health.

Little Miss has a long road ahead of her. Her tonsils are quite swollen, but the ENT doc gave her a treatment so I am hoping that she will be on the mend soon. As for sleep for me, I'll take it where I can get it. Saw my mother on Tuesday, she is quite upset and clearly in a lot of pain.
