Traffic Problems

Finding a parking space for your car can be a challenge at any time of the year, but December’s busyness seems to heighten all the transport problems. There are so many vehicles and, it seems, so little space. Walking or public transport do sometimes offer obvious solutions, but are not always practical. It’s easy to start dreaming of simpler times, when less traffic cluttered our roads and people hurried less. But maybe there were different problems back in the ‘good old days’. In the postcard image above you can see horses and wagons all lined up greeting the express train about to arrive at the local railway station. Most horses seem to be standing quietly, no doubt used to waiting. But I wonder how they reacted to the train’s whistle as it approached the station? And just look at those wheels. I doubt there would have been much comfort bouncing along on the rough-surfaced roads. The transport solution must lie somewhere in between those simple times and today’s crazy road traffic.

Not to mention all the horse manure that must have been littering the place.

@JudyEv there would also be the problem of feeding and watering the horses.

Those old days would have been the only transportation we would have known. Knowing what I know now, I'd be too impatient to get where I'm going and in comfort.

yes, we live at a much faster pace now. Are you off to Florida in a few days? Or already there?

You're lucky! And our parking wardens are having a ball dishing out tickets for those who overstay their parking time at the moment.

I'm inclined to agree. Horse transport may sound like fun but it certainly had its drawbacks.

@valmnz Think of your disks! Horse carts on streets with potholes.

That is one of the things I would not have liked about the good old days - the time it took to get from point A to point B.

However, when you think about, if you get caught in busy traffic now it seems to take forever to get where you're going. The route would have been more straight forward then, less on the road.

I am quite glad i do not have a car, since it is more of a liability than an asset the problem these days are that there are so many people, each with their own car

The too old days when we moved on carriages with horses were not comfortable, but the late 50's when we already had comfortable cars and a lot less traffic were better.

I wonder if the olden days were better. Now, it is very crazy on the roads. I wonder what could be inbetween yesteryears and now.
