The price of Onions

In the evening I just wanted to prepare a curry and found a shortage of Onions.I had been to the market to purchase some. When inquired the vendor informed me that there are no Onions. The same reply was from another vendor also. I straight away approached the Vegetable vendor who maintains a big shop.He informed that he received only a bag in the morning and they are over and asked me to come tomorrow. Later I came to know during the discussion that they are in shortage and they are being sold at Rs.60 per kg. Really disgusting. The regular price of Onions is only Rs.20/-.I did not find any reason for this sudden rise in the price of Onions. Anyhow, nothing can be hidden and the reason will come out soon. This has become a regular practice in India with the Vendor to hide the vegetables and other items of regular use and create an artificial shortage. This is not only with Onions but with almost all items. Do you experience such shortages of items in your country?

I think you tend to forget that fruits and vegetables are seasonal. Colored onions like the ones in your photo are picked in France in July and August. In January those picked in the Southern Hemisphere will be available and the price will lower. It is not the right month to buy onions at a cheap price.

@shivamani10 Any vegetable has a crop period. I do not know it for onions in India, but you are certainly not "getting them whenever you need them". They can be sold all the year, yes, but they are not picked all the year.

Here we get them whenever we need them. The black marketeers hide them and create an artificial shortage only to sell them at higher prices.

Today I bought it at 50 Rs/Kg. Yes it's a regular practise in India to hide things to make it short first and wait till it's rate increases and then sell it in the market. Every year it happens.

No.They first hide the product and pretend as if it is not available. As soon as the demand is felt they rise the price. This is totally a criminal mentality.
