Why did Donald Trump get so many votes in the 2016 Presidential election?

When asked this question, I'm guessing that some people liked that fact that he was selling the point that he isn't a Washington insider. Many liked his "promise" to "drain the swamp" which of course, he did the opposite. Perhaps some were attracted to his tendency to say the first thing that popped into his head. Others may have liked the fact that he promised that there would be no cuts in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. He promised tax cuts for the middle class. We will never see anything from him, his Administration or the Republican majority in Congress that is truly beneficial to the middle class. Basically, he told the people what they wanted to hear, even when he had no intention of keeping those promises. He knew he could continually lie and get away with it. Plus, he spun some things to make them sound good, as did those people who paid for commericals benefitting Trump. Wordsmiths and professional "Spin Doctors" can make just about anything sound appealing. Of course, many people who voted for Trump didn't care for Trump, they voted against Hillary Clinton. I'm guessing that to some people, anyone who ran against Hillary would be "the lesser of two evils".

I suspect a lot voted for trump because they wanted change from the normal politics. To be honest I thought he offered something different at first. Now I think he is either intellectually subnormal, badly advised or has dementia...and I don't mean that as a joke. The man is a mess. PS...and this is a big PS. I've read a lot of comment sections of various US publications where people are saying he makes the US a joke or an embarrassment...not true. He's the joke not the US as a country or as a people...we in the UK can see that.

I would have voted for Hilary any day. I think her main crime was that she was a woman as Trump's offensive behaviour and lies have all be ignored.'

He got so many votes because a lot of Americans are dumb. Look at red state education and income levels.
