Gay Rights? Pardon Me but Your Butt is Showing

Before anyone accuse me of being homophobic, let me first say I have friends in the LGBT community and some of my relatives are gay. I also find it unwarranted when priests and fundamentalist preachers use the pulpit to harangue and condemn sexual preferences that are not in conformity with their religious doctrine. Worst still are the politicians who become spokespersons for these prejudicial views just to win votes. During "Pride" parades there are "straight" people who find the way participants are scantily dress and their "In your face" attires offensive. I must confess I was taken aback the first time I watch one. But it's a parade and the Carnival festive mood makes people want to celebrate in outrageous fashion. They also want to make a statement. Gay Rights. Recently an American gay couple were arrested in Thailand for taking photos in the grounds of a Buddhist temple showing their butts and posting these in their instagram account, Traveling_butts (now deleted) which showed pictures of their butts at famous tourist spots around the world. Buttmen..er I mean both men have allegedly admitted to taking the lewd photos and were fine 5,000 Baht (153 dollars) for the offense. However they are still in custody pending further charges for breaching the computer crime (maximum 5 years jail and/or 100,000 baht fine) and religious insult charge (maximum 7 years jail and/or 40,000 baht fine) Were they trying to make a "gay rights" statement or just being (pardon the profanity) A**holes Photo image: Pixabay

I hope they go to jail, defending your rights should never mean offending the others. Should normal couples go to temples and takes photos of their reproducing organs to defend "normal people" rights?

@josie_ I know, in my opinion "normal" depends on "majority of people". People get offended so easily in our days.

@josie_ As a matter of fact if you are not part of a minority you are discriminated.

@LadyDuck _So true. Funny how the pendulum has swung to the other extreme. Now it's the minorities who are harassing the majority with unreasonable demands and entitlements all in the name of "political correctness" and the "struggle" against discrimination..

I find some behaviours offensive whether in the LGBT community of people who are "straight".. I also have friends and family who are gay, but they don't rub our faces in it.

@Morleyhunt _As the saying goes, "What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander" Unfortunately that is not the case when "the shoe is on the other foot" for the socially discriminated groups.

I don't understand why people does such things on holy places. People should not do it as it hurt the feelings of people.

Sadly as this case provided, holy places have become nothing more than "tourist spots".

It's rude and insulting to do such poses at a holy place. They deserve to be punished for what they did. They should have some respect.

Perhaps they felt entitled to do as they please because they were foreign tourists and local laws as well as respect for the host country's culture and traditions don't apply to them?

i wanted to write about this, too, when i read about this a few days back. you used the right words - "in your face." that seems to be their mindset by doing this stunt around the world. in a way, it's like we're visiting you to poop on you.

They can advocate "gay rights" without these acts of profanity and religious sacrilege. What made me angrier were the photos of these uncouth persons after they were taken into police custody. They were smiling and showed no remorse for their deplorable acts.

I think when you are visiting another country you should take care not to cause offence. You are a guest and should be considerate of their customs.

I don't believe the LGBT community would support such boorish behavior. The responsibility for this lewd performance lay squarely on the two arrested persons.

That is offensive behaviour and the fat thy were gay is irrelevant as that would be offensive if anyone did it. Such a shame as it does nothing to help people more accepting of gay people . In fact just the opposite Also extremely stupid in places like Thailand where they imprison people very easily and the prisons are not pleasant at all. VERY STUPID of them altogether

There is a large population of LGBT, both foreign and native in Thailand. A gay lifestyle is socially accepted in that country. But it's also comprise of a deeply religious Buddhist population.

@josie_ Everyone should be accepted by all people but all people should respect everyone else and behaviour in a socially accepted manner

these men should respect the culture, or the religion, of the place they had their pictures taken. it is not promoting the rights of gays, it is simply showing the different side of an uncultured gay.

The late Filipino comedian Dolphy use to portray gays in their worse traits and movie goers laugh at these gags. There were no LGBT advocacy then but even today prejudice and stereotyping "gay" people exist partly because of media but also because some members of the gay community commit elicit acts that turn public opinion against them.

Buttmen, how funny. I just think it's disrespectful to have that kind of thing going on in a temple. I don't think they should have jail time, maybe just community service.

They wouldn't like conditions in a Thai prison. Community service like removing vulgar graffiti off toilet walls to remind them of their own vulgarity might be a good idea. They could also clean the latrine while they're there.
