Finding People Online. How accurate are online dierectories?

I have lost touch with an old friend and I tried to find out about her by using an online directory. I typed in her name and I got some details about her. This information told me that she was living somewhere in the south of England . The details also showed up one other name living at the address with her. I thought that it was good that she was not living alone, but on closer inspection, the other name was that of her own maiden name. So how accurate are online directories if you want to find information on somebody?

Most of the sites you propose to find people are not accurate.

The one I was using does not seem to be accurate. But then I was only using the free service and not the one that you subscribe to.

@millie02 I am not sure that the paying services are more accurate.

They do invade people`s privacy because they get their information from government records.

@millie02 I would inquire about them through some common friends or check their profile on social networking sites.

unfortunaely they are only as accurate as the info that people choose to give them. Maybe search for your friend on facebook??

Unfortunately I am not on Facebook, so this would not be possible. However , I shall keep trying.

If I know the names of close family members of a friend, then I can usually find that friend due to the family names provided, like sons, daughters or parents.

It is more accurate to get information from family members and old friends if you know them.

It depends. It could just be listing both names to make it easier to find them if someone only knew them by their maiden name. I've found myself listed on sites that show some of my previous addresses as places I have never lived. I even have myself listed as using an 'alias' I have never heard of on a few. Allegedly, I have said my last name is 'Rotcbffi', which I am pretty sure is some moron not knowing how to spell when filing a police report.

Well, perhaps there are really two of you! Unless somebody has stolen your identity, because this can happen a lot nowadays.
