How many of you that think kids should grow up with animals?

Do you think kids can learn how to respect other animals if they have one of their own. I just read a post about a family thinking of adopting an animal and the little girl went ahead and punched a dog and the person told her not to do it. The father said to her not to talk to his daughter that way. I would not let them ever adopt an animal. Animals have feelings too and should be respected. If there are lots of kids out there like that little girl then they should never have a pet. What do you think here?

I saw that post, and have to agree, children like that shouldn't have pets. Pets are a huge responsibility. Parents should gauge their children's interest in pets. For instance if their friends have pets, how do the kids act around them. If it's good, then it's a good idea to get a pet for the family. I've had a pet in the family, growing up, most of my life. And for quite a few years while my children were growing up as well and the 20 of the last 21 years.

@Hannihar I'm allergic to cats, so it's hard for me to have them in the house. My son did have a cat when he lived with me, and it didn't seem to affect me, but I found out it did when the cat passed away. It was the worst day for my son. I felt very sorry for him. It was then that all my coughing, sneezing, and congestion cleared up overnight.

Valerie, you are experienced with animals. We had animals around us growing up. My mother was allergic so they were never inside the house. They were either in our basement or in the garage. My real responsibility was when my ex brought the dog and cat home and gave them to me. Now, I have Sophie. You are right that kids have to understand how to take care of an animal and children should have pets they can be responsible for. Not everyone should have one.

It depends but generally yes, kids and animals belong- with love on both sides. My daughter knew about cats when she was just born and we went from there. I also know that animals are the innocents and the one who generally suffers the most when humans do not bother to teach their children well.

Certainly children should be taught not to be cruel to animals. That is very sad.

When I read it and saw how the father reacted made me very mad. I hope no one ever gives them or sells them an animal until the father learns that animals should be treated with respect and teach his daughter that.

Kids should spend some time with animals before they get one for their own. This way; you can see how the kids react around the animal.

I think it is very important that children grow up with animals but also that they should be taught to care and respect them. the parents of that child clearly have issues and would not be great role models!

If you don't like animals - stay away from them. No need to be cruel to them.
