I've been polishing brass today

Before we got quite so old, we had a pair of harness ponies that we drove in competitions. I drove the ponies and Vince was my groom. Eventually it all became more work than pleasure and we found a good home for the ponies. We have sold almost everything to do with our carriage driving days except for a set of hand-made harness. We’re now about to advertise the harness on an appropriate Facebook group page. So today I’ve been polishing dozens of brass buckles. I cleaned the harness some time ago but the brass components needed an extra polish. This is about the nicest photo I have of the ponies. The one on the far side is Burgundy and the closest one is Fabian. They were Welsh C ponies. Aren’t they beautiful?

What kind of competitions? Not a race?

It's called combined driving - like a Three Day event but for driven horses. You have to do a dressage test then a marathon which involves obstacles then drive a set course through pairs of road cones.

They are very nice ponies. I hope you're able to sell them for a good price.

They were sold quite some time ago and became pony-trekking ponies. They had a good life there.

It isn't the most popular of sports but I know Belgium has some very good drivers.

Polishing brass is tough. We had so much of polishing to do - gifts that we received. Sold them all. That is a lovely photo.

I always shudder when I see people with lots of silver trophies in their lounge. So much polishing to do! I'm glad you like the photo.

@jaboUK I've been going through all my old "Carriage Driving" magazines and then I'm going to give them to a friend who is still driving. They are from 1996- 1998. It's been interesting seeing who was driving then etc. I haven't really followed results either here or in England but then I went online and it seems Boyd Exell (Australian) is now the World Champion. He is based in the UK.

@Judyev a fine pair indeed. However I'm Ireland we wash our bras in warm soapy water rather than polishing them.

It might seem strange but it would have hurt too much to see them when they weren't mine any longer. I did hear from others that they were well and happy.

Wow, that's pretty amazing that you did this. Those horses are beautiful and their coats are so shiny. They seem a bit large to be called ponies.

They were still pony height. That year they had really good coats.

That must have been hard to sell the ponies they are lovely. I hope you get a good price for all your harnesses.

It was hard to part with them as they were very special to us but as I said, it became a lot of work and rather than have them sitting idly in the paddock I found them a good home.

They certainly are gorgeous, and beautifully turned out. I hope you find a buyer, it's always sad getting rid of the accoutrements of a much-loved activity.

Yes, the harness is about the last of many items. I still have some books on driving which I might try to sell after I read them one more time and some driving magazines which I'll pass on to a friend.
