Learning to play the violin

I have just bought one 4x4 mozart violin today and start learning by myself. Have also bought some scores and tutorials and seek the help of internet stuffs. But for the first day comes really hard. The position, the press, the ear, the notes don't come in handy. But watching the experts really are inspiring! Anyone here who knows how to play? Or also someone who is starting just like me.

As @MALUSE suggested, I'd have a few lessons first just to get the foundations right - holding the violin correctly, etc. It can be hard to break bad habits later. And are you able to tune the violin yourself? Your playing won't sound musical unless the instrument has been tuned properly. You can buy electronic tuners nowadays which make the job easier.

Thanks! I used my piano to tune the violin. But after a week, already learned to have the correct tune. It's just different from the guitar that are having frets divider. Really the ear is the key. Just that now, I am exposing myself, watching how to play and how it must sound correctly. At least while finding my trainor. Doremi and twinkle twinkle is my piece right now.

@JudyEv yes I knew playing guitar since highschool. Just really a dream come true of buying a violin of my own coz comparing, violin is much expensive and that I couldn't afford that time. Though things seem harder as they look! But I hope I can get into it. Really need a total bunch of continuous practice. Thank you so many much!

@ddnj2006 I didn't know how much you knew about music. If you play guitar then that totally changes the picture. And yes, without frets you have to rely on your ear to play in tune. It's a bit like a trombone in that respect. You need a good ear to play that well too. Hopefully you'll progress past twinkle twinkle shortly.

I always wanted to play a Violin. On Youtube there are amazing lessons that teach you how to play and it's important to know how to hold the Violin in good position.

True. It is a major need of relaxing while playing that right holding position is really a great role. Having hard times on first timer like me. Ouch!

That's great! I think self-teaching gets easier with time, my brother self-taught himself the guitar and piano so I'm sure you can do it too with the violin.

Why don't you go to a teacher, at least at the beginning?

I am considering that. But I want to try it first by myself.

@ddnj2006 I think the other way round would be better. You may get used to something which is wrong, a wrong posture, for example. A teacher could give you instructions on how to play correctly and then you continue on your own.

Does clarinet is the same like playing the flute? Have tried the bamboo type but never continued.

@ddnj2006 not really because you play a clarinet vertically and the flute sideways , and thats cool !

You are amazing if you learn how to play the violin on your own. I'm not into musical instrument and I don't ever dream of learning one. Good luck and hope you get to be a great one on your own

Good for you! Hope you have a wonderful adventure. Not teaching myself anything right now, but plan on learning the mandolin in 2018.

Nice! Mandolin is most likely tune as violin, except the timbre and the press as they say, but haven't also tried yet.

That's true, patience is really the enemy. But as it goes, the harder it gets, the better sound of playing as well. Have learned the guitar from my highschool days and still the ability seats.

It's not good idea to ask here for learning. It's better to learn with violin teacher.
