Good afternoon. While reading one of the papers and came across this. I found it interesting.White people who live in Lawrenceville,GA they had a chance of a life time to attend "Come Meet a Black person. It was sponsored by the Urban Media makers. Most white people do not have any nonwhite friends. . She told the Washington Post that she wanted to change things. I have never met a black person More than two dozen people showed up to share chili and corn bread. But fewer than half dozen were white. My thoughts. It is a wonderful idea on this. How would this work in your state or area. Here we do not have too many blacks, maybe a few. What is your thought on this.

We would never even have such an event in the area where I live because everybody is treated equally regardless of race. Our city is known for our multicultural society.

@Corbin5 That is probably the case in some areas but I live in a much smaller area and I don't believe it is as bad here as it is in other places.

I don't really get it. Most of us have or have had friends and neighbors that are pretty diverse. So yeh it does kind of sound like a joke. People are so weird, sometimes. But then I've seen a lot of total bigots, too, so it shouldn't surprise me I guess.

That is so nice two dozen blacks showed up but shame on the local whites in the area for not showing up and promoting a nice event to try to bridge the racial gap. In my school there were maybe a handful of people who werent black. Now there is usually at least one per grade level.

@lnillerman it is but some people never leave their area and if there are no different races there those people will never have seen one. I never saw a black person in my town until I was 11. It was only when I went out of town shopping etc that I saw them. I want more diversity here for my own children.

I grew up in a culturally diverse city. It's a shame that so many haven't mingled with others before. Pathetic!

The first black person I saw in my life was when I was 11 and went to the US. It was the man that drove us from the airport to the city. The only thing I understood was the repeated word to my dad "downtown". Now we have many black people here due to the immigration of people from Haiti and Dominican Republic.

We have a melting pot society in our area, and I cannot see a need for this in my immediate area because all races call our city home. Even the small rural area that I moved from we had wonderful relations between blacks and whites. We had the end of the Underground Railroad in our municipality and because of that we knew to what extent that race endured hardships and discrimination.

@amadeo I live out in the country and I have 2 Hispanic families that live to my left; a black lady that lives to my right. Another black fellow that lives just down the road, so as far as I'm concerned my county road which in total length is roughly 1 mile long, that there is a lot of diversity right here. And in my town of Fairfield, we have only 3,000 population. Right now it's about 1/3 white; 1/3 black and 1/3 hispanic.

Hmmm. We have very few black people in our town or the next, but there are black people here. We have a black business owner in town. Pretty high percentage as we have maybe six businesses in town anyway. We have children who are mixed race here. We also do not have many Hispanic people here, although they tell me that before 1950 when the railroad was big here we had a Mexican Town on the other side of the street. Predominately we have probably mostly German and Scandinavian people I think. To me, in this area, that would not be a good approach as it would be emphasizing the differences.

Oh good grief, apparently those 'white' people were never 'exposed' to black people on purpose by their parents @amadeo . I've known black people all my life and lived in their neighborhoods. Some are good and some are bad and that's no different from the white people.

I am not sure if some here do not understand this post.We are not insulting here.. Many whites in our town have not met many. For the reason we do not have many here. OH!gosh I give it up here.we are not talking about being different. Some people do not have the experience.with this. I Give up.

When I was growing up in Napa California back in the 50's I saw my very first black man. I got very very excited and turned to my mother and blurted out "Gee Mommy, look!!! That man is made of chocolate!!!!!!" I am fortunate to live in an area that isn't bigoted or has racial problems. I have friends and acquaintances from all backgrounds and I hope one day we don't have to worry about racial problems.

@amadeo It sometimes isn't if they "understand" the post, it's if they "choose" to understand the post. How many people would choose to hug a stranger of a different color or nationality? I have to admit it's fun to see the look on people's faces when I do that. I feel it shouldn't matter. But it's incredible how many people who still do!
