Christmas fun for my Mom

I wish I could have been a little bird, spying on my Mom when she got the Santa sock that I sent her. Mom loves mail. She has always been one of those folks who write letters. I decided that at 96 she did not need more knick knacks. Nope. She needed fun. And fun for Mom at this point is instant gratification. Chocolate reaches through the dementia quite well. I found a lovely white sock that has an embroidered poinsettia on its side. I bought Christmas colored foil wrapped chocolates. I stuffed that sock and mailed it off. My sister reported that Mom had a blast. She mowed right through the candy. My sister sounded like maybe Mom should have saved some. At Mom's age? I said no. Let her have her fun. And she did.

@rebelann Considering her age, Mom is still pretty sturdy. Amazing.

At least that and the fact that she can still have fun @sallypup I hope she remains sturdy and able to have fun to the end.

@rebelann Me, too. She is not making many common connections these days but she can still taste and enjoy sugar.

how sweet of you and what a nice thing to do. I too enjoy the old fashioned mail delivery system. but have more problem these days of getting someone to bring it from the box near the road. just the same I still try

@bunnybon7 Its hard when the mail box isn't right on the house wall. Mine is clear down our long access road and then across the road so in the winter it can be a chore to get the mail.

Kind of true, whats the point. If she cannot remember and hope that's not insensitive, but what I would want if it were me.

@crossbones27You are not insensitive. My hope and solace is that Mom has a good time in the moment even if she doesn't remember afterwards. Just have to hope that solitary moment is fun.

That would have been the ideal present for your Mum. My Mum always wrote letters to me (and me to her) when I lived away.

@JudyEv Those Mom letters are precious. Such a grand thing to find in the mail box.

Glad you were able to give your mom a good time. Much better than a trinket in my opinion!

@maezee My Mom is 96. She has gotten rid of years and years of trinkets and still has her room full to the ceiling with stuff. I did not want to add to the piles.

@koophanger There is so little that my Mom can do now that she is up there in her 90s. Chocolate fits the need completely.

I've learned that my father is also thrilled when he gets mail. I mail him a birthday card, even if I'm stopping in. When I've gone away for a week or so, I mail him a post card. For the dollar or two I invest...he gets a great deal of pleasure.

@Morleyhunt You are a good daughter. That's a good idea to mail a card even if you plan to be there. My Mom is clear across the state so sending her a little something is all I can do at this point.

@Deepizzaguy I think the sister that my Mom lives with is still trying to keep Mom eating at a sane rate, eating healthy etc. I figure Mom has made it to 96, she should enjoy herself.
