Check my sources, I forgot

I see many of you are able to dispose of your unneeded prescriptions at a pharmacy. I quoted in my discussion on that topic information I had been given by my older sister. I forget that my sister makes things up. It also may be that her issue was because of where she lived. At any rate. . . I should say that my sister told me she was told by a pharmacist to crush meds and mix them with used kitty litter or coffee grounds. So I did that. Is there a "source" in your life that you should always question? My sister is now and always has been that source in my life. The unfortunate thing is, she has also told me the truth at times, and I did not believe her, because of her tendency to lie. Be true, be honest, and check your sources.

Our police and fire departments collect unused medicine maybe once a month. But have heard that pharmacies do take them..

It seemed like if they have a collection around here it is only once or twice a year.

@GardenGerty all you have to do is call the fire or police department and ask them

My pharmacist told me to mix water in the bottle with any unused meds, shake it up so the pills dissolve, and just throw it out (but to remove my info from the label.) They do not accept unused medication; I asked if I could dispose of it at the pharmacy and was told no.

Okay, so it is not just the people my sister has dealt with. Yes, always remove your information from the containers.

@GardenGerty It must depend on where you live.

Only our Chemists take on unused Medicine and I have a huge pile to take back to them pretty soon as we live quite a way out and I cannot go every day to take them back.

@GardenGerty So moneywise you got a bit of relief from buying them again for a while I hope. They are expensive here also and I donĀ“t know why that is.

Good idea to check your sources. I've never heard of disposing unused medication in that manner, though I don't drink coffee and don't have a cat, so neither would be beneficial to me, if that is the way to dispose of them.

I wonder what people would do in your case. I thought about putting them in the barbecue to burn. That is the end result, our trash is incinerated somewhere, after crushing. Not locally, but somewhere.

@GardenGerty People take unused medication to the police department for disposal. They don't recommend throwing it away. I need to do that as I have two medications I'm no longer taking.

It can be tricky. I tend to just believe people and often get caught out. It's hard to remember that not everyone tells the truth.

It is a difficult time either way for me. Sometimes if I do not believe her, I find out that I should have. She is rather bizarre, and now she is losing her memory somewhat as well.

@GardenGerty That does make it difficult. And you don't like to NOT believe your own sister.

That sounds interesting. Not sure what I did with some I didn't use. It was several years ago now.

When we know we will not be taking them, we get rid of them. Some of these my husband and sister knew they did not like the side effects. I would be cautious if they are out dated. The time lapse can make them stronger or weaker.

Getting rid of it in used cat litter has always been the method I've used. No one is desperate enough for meds to steal it out of poop and pee filled kitty litter. Yuck lol

Yep, that is what I did. Up until this year neither of us had anything that we did not finish. This heart trouble sure has messed up hubby's lifestyle.
