Java

the lamp that is lit

This java lamp is brought home by my big brother from UK. It has been here on top of the black-and-white television set, beside the angel figurine that I got from a Christmas party celebration in the hospital where I was the HN. My sister placed the java lamp near the nativity scene at the side of the Christmas tree. The lamp is switched on at night, and the red “corpuscles” rise once the lamp is already heated. It looks so nice in red. Once it is not on however, those red cells don’t come out. I wonder why it is called a java lamp. (My son said the lamp is a LAVA lamp, which I and my sister disagreed.); or maybe because those liquids rising up look like the lava from a volcano from Java, the Krakatoa?

This kind of lamp is properly known as a LAVA lamp. It is sometimes erroneusly referred to as a 'Java lamp' due to mishearing or because the two words sound alike. Java is an island in Indonesia which is famous for its coffee (amongst other things). Because Java coffee was the favourite beverage for certain programmers, they named the programming language they were working on after it. Java is also noted for its traditional crafts and there is a kind of pierced metal lantern which is sometimes referred to as a 'Java lamp'.

yes, thanks much for the heads-up. whenever i hear the word Java, i always connect this to the disaster movie i watched when i was still a child, the "Krakatoa, East of Java", and that volcanic eruption i felt was what brought out the idea of the Java lamp, with those red bursts inside the lamp when switched on.

I'm pretty sure that it's a lava lamp. My younger son had one. Actually, it's still in his old bedroom.

thanks, it is lava lamp. so, the makers of the hidden objects game were wrong in indicating an object as java lamp.
