Journey To The Centre Of Time

This might sound like the title of a science fiction novel, but it isn’t at all. It refers to the Greenwich Meridian in London. This is where all clocks, watches and computers get the time from. You are either hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or hours behind it, or possibly, as in the UK, on GMT or British Summer Time (when our clock have an extra hour. While many go to London to focus on the big sights, such as Big Ben, the Tower Of London, etc., I enjoy finding understated joys like this. It really does feel like standing at the centre of the universe. Arthur Chappell

I didn't realise that the whole world uses GMT as their starting point.

It must be a wonderful feeling to stand there-the boundary of the first meridian of earth.

Thank you for sharing the photo. I have never visited the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, even if I knew everything about GMT and being in the GMT+1 zone.

@LadyDuck I didn't get to go inside the observatory sadly - hopefully on a future visit

You could turn this into a science fiction story but I suspect it's already been done.

I can imagine that would feel quite special. In Gingin north of Perth, (West Oz, not Scotland), there is a Gravity Discovery Centre and Observatory, a "hands-on" science education centre providing information and displays regarding physics and astronomy and specialising in gravity and cosmology. We haven't visited it yet but it would be nice to.

Haven't traveled to London but could be possible in the future. Traveling is a great way to escape and see many sights. Enjoy!

I have no idea why, but I always assumed GMT started in Greenland for some reason. I just learned something I didn't know.

That would be a cool place to visit. I've always wondered about Greenwich, and how it was decided that was the time place.
