Could We Really Flip Congress?

Tonight, a closely watched election in Alabama resulted in the election of the Democratic candidate, Jones, rather than the Republican candidate, Moore. There were many reasons for the way the election turned out, including the fact that Moore was a flawed candidate. However, once Jones is sworn in later in January, the Republican majority in the Senate will drop down to 51 to 49. Some analysts believe that it may be possible to replace one of the Republican Senators in either Nevada or Arizona with a Democrat next year. That is still a long way off, however, so a lot could happen between now and then. Meanwhile, in Congressional Districts across the U.S., there is a movement to flip at least 24 seats from Republican to Democrat. This would give the Democrats the majority in the House of Representatives and block Trump's agenda during the last two years of his presidency. However, that election is still a year away and it is hard to predict what will actually happen. Personally, I am unhappy with the way my own U.S Representative has voted the past few months, often supporting bills which will hurt Californians. She is definitely putting her party ahead of her state, which disappoints me. Even though I voted for our Representative in both of the past two elections, I am now dedicating my energy towards defeating her in the next election. I have donated to her likely opponent and have signed up to volunteer for her opponent's campaign. No matter which side you support, are you getting involved in the next election? The primaries start in a few months, so we are likely to hear a lot about the election in the coming months. What are you planning to do to help the candidates you support?

We are living in strange times. Even though Jones won by a small margin, at least a majority of people in the Republican state of Alabama voted with a sense of decency.

@Sheilamarie78 - Yes, we are living in strange times. Sadly, according to Republican analyst SECupp, most Republicans in Alabama still voted for Moore. It was a surge in Democratic voters who supported Jones which swung the election.

@TheHorse - I agree. I would like to see more people behave with a sense of decency. I am sad that there are so many who have lost it.

@TheHorse - I hope so, too. I went over to UCI today to work with students there on posters for Katie Porter, the Democrat who is going to run against Mimi Walters, our current Republican Congresswoman. I hope she wins!

@DianneN - We were lucky that we got the news fairly early our time. It was so wonderful. Perhaps this will be the start of a major trend. I hope so!
