Most of us like to eat but do we chew our food well? Do you hurriedly eat your food? Do you pay attention to chewing your food? How many times do you chew each mouthful? * We should chew each mouthful about 40 times * Chewing improves digestion and overall health What do you think?

I've always been a slow eater and chew my food thoroughly to savor it. I never counted. lol

That's very good! Try counting and see if you are able to chew a bite for 50 times. It took me 2 hours to eat supper last night and I was doing about 30 chews per bite.

I eat slowly and chew my food well. Eating slowly makes me feel more satisfied and I never have time to go back for seconds so it helps me control my weight as well.

I never really count how many times I chew my food, but I remember learning about the 40 times chewing when I was a kid. I guess I'm guilty of eating in a hurry sometimes.

I think I was doing about 5 chews per bite. Last night, at 30 chews per bite, it took me 2 hours to eat supper.

This is a very good post. I used to not take the time, and my food did not digest. That's why I have stomach problems. Plus I used to blend foods that didn't go well together like eggplant and icecream. I'm going to aim for forty chews, although i hope that won't make the food too mushy.

I think the idea is to liquefy the food and then it would be well mixed with digestive enzymes in the saliva and make the digestion easy.

@1hopefulman Thank you. A very scientific explanation of the purpose of chewing.

Yes it improves digestion, but I would attempt anywhere near forty times - only if I am eating tough meat.

When I eat later, I will try to count the chews and see how it goes. I just came across an article in a health magazine about the importance of chewing to also get the maximum nutrition out of the food.

That might make the food too mushy. But forty chews on a tough steak just might work.

I always chew my food well. Actually I eat slowly. This is my habit. If I eat fast, I will feel uncomfortable.

Wonderful! Yes, some things can't be chewed for long as they melt in our mouths but we can take the time to mix them well with saliva to help digestion. When I eat a ripe banana, and I only eat them when they are very ripe, after a couple of bites, it liquefies and I swish it around in my mouth for a while enjoying it before I swallow it.
15 Dec 17
Yes I do it. If somebody eats very fast I use to tell them to eat slow.

Felix, this is a very good post. I used to gulp my food down and finish fast. Now, I try and chew it more and make it last longer.

I tend to take my time when I eat, so I probably chew pretty well. I've never counted, though. And the nuns told me that too much mastication can make me go blind.

Oh! Very interesting! I have heard we should chew 32 times of each mouthful since we have 32 teeth altogether! Fine ! I agree we should chew many times for easy digestion! But everything finishes off before reaching the total count! I have tried too! And I found this great! Thank you!

well... when i'm hungry like when i come home from work or school, i gobble it up. but when i'm patient or when the food's just not very good, i take small bites and try to chew as slowly as i can. i didn't know how healthy it was but i might as well try doing it now!
