Seven Years Ago

United States
December 13, 2017 7:25pm CST
This picture was taken 7 years ago. It was the first Christmas that my now husband and I spent together. It was the last Christmas that mom would have at her housing complex. I look at all of the faces of my family members in the photo and smile. Many are now separated from their spouses/partners. Many have moved away. We have gained a few more family members since then. It is amazing how quickly time goes by. Cherish every moment for at the drop of a hand, it can change. Live, love, laugh.

@ElusiveButterfly I don't think we got any pictures this Thanksgiving well maybe one or two but most people that came were already gone when the picture was taken, so we missed out on the chance to get a picture of everyone. There was close to 20 people at Thanksgiving! I normally head up the picture taking as nobody else seems to be interested. Oh well, atleast I have the memories!

You look like a big happy and loving bunch here. We start with our Christmas parties this weekend, and we're all so looking forward to being together. We're a big bunch, but we never take each other for granted and so many of the kids are friends with their first cousins, its so heart-warming to see.

We only had a gathering with my siblings and their children, and the grandchildren too. When we started using a firehouse for our gatherings and that was a good place. It was large enough to accommodate all of us.

@ElusiveButterfly We've done that in the past also, we've also rented an old school house converted into a small hall, but the 8 kids are all married, and we have 25 kids, most of which are married, and that generation has 27 kids. So in total that makes 95 of us.

For me this Christmas will be the first one spent entirely alone with the company of my cat Sid. I will get through it but it has been a tough year with the passing of my husband in August and all the feeling I am dealing with. I am hoping Christmas movies will help me through.

Sad that so many couples split up. Our family seems to be blessed. For the size of our family there aren't many breakups. This Christmas will be the first time that our immediate family won't all be together. My grandson is going to California....his mom is going as a chaperone so his father took a shift at work. Changes.

My son and his fiance will not be at our family Christmas. They are hopefully coming over for Christmas Eve. If not for dinner, I'll have snacks and cocoa.

I'm not surprised you've noticed a lot of changes in seven years. It's a bit like that with my Christmas card list over the years. Some have passed away; others have parted company.

I think of all of the family we have lost in the past 7 years. There are only 2 of my grandmother's children living. One is my mother, the other my uncle. They both have Alzheimer's.

That picture is awesome! So many of you! You are right things do change and I pray for your family that they would stay together the ones who are together. If it weren't for God I know my family would be broken apart. Some of them have moved on to someone else and its hard to watch the brokenness especially for the sake of my grandchildren. It hurts to see them dragged from one step parent to the next.

It is hard to watch my nieces and nephews adjust to the newness of changing relationships. As long as both parents are dedicated to raising the children together and making sure that their needs are met it isn't so bad. But, unfortunately even the best broken relationships are just that. They sometimes say hurtful things and the children hear it, even if you don't think they are listening.

@ElusiveButterfly My experience so far with both sides of my childrens lives has been a lot of drama and immaturity! I have one Son who is very stable he and his wife are like two peas in a pod they've been together like 13 years and I've never received a phone call with a complaint with either one. They just get along beautifully and they are very active running together going out to different places, both love to shop and travel. They've been on 4 cruises. They travel to friends weddings in different states etc... The other 3 struggle things are up and down its like they are on a roller coaster and the poor grandchildren are dragged along. It's heart breaking and I know all I can do is pray for them! I know God can help them as He has helped me so much. My life was a mess too and He is still working on me.
