Man, I Hope And Pray She Was Telling the Truth

There's a disturbing trend with all of these accusations of "sexual misconduct" going around. The trend is that the men are not getting the Constitutionally-guaranteed "innocent until proven guilty" protection. Of all of the celebrities and politicians who've been accused this year (so many that the women who've done the accusing were named Time magazine's "People of the Year"), only one -- Bill Cosby -- has been afforded a trial...and even that was civil, not legal. Last month I joked with a friend that he may be the only man left standing without an accusation by the end of the year (unless his wife wants to accuse him ). My daily routine has become wake up, check to see if we nuked North Korea (or vice versa), and check to see who has been accused of "sexual misconduct" today. (Today [12/13] it's PBS host Tavis Smiley.) There are national stories about this, of course; however, your local news is probably flooded with local stories as well. Here we have two people, ironically both named Dan Johnson, being accused. One is a Louisville Metro Council member. The other is a Kentucky state representative from Mount Washington (which is about 15 miles south of Louisville). The city councilman was accused of grabbing a councilwoman's backside and, separately, dropping his pants in front of an aide. The state representative, on the other hand, has been accused of raping a then-17-year-old girl at his church (he dubbed himself the "pope," so his nickname is "Pope Dan Johnson") in 2012. On Tuesday Johnson called a press conference at his "Heart of Fire" church and denied the allegations. Today, Rep. Dan Johnson killed himself. I hope and pray his accuser was telling the truth.

It is important to remember how damaging rumors, innuendoes and outright accusations can be to the accused, and their families. I hope she told the truth.

I agree. The repercussions on an innocent family can be devastating.

When you think about it any woman prior to 1980 was probably harassed in one way or another. In the 1970s the gender war was really going strong and even those of us who didn't want to be involved with it were inadvertently pulled in. Many men were indignant that women were taking jobs that they felt should be performed only by men and I have heard that a lot of women brave enough to join the military or other mostly male type jobs suffered a lot of harassment but I didn't see nearly that much as what all those women are claiming. Why did they wait so long to accuse? I think everyone judged DT even before he won the election but now I wonder how many actually went out to vote? In the past I have seen women who were offered help by men become indignant simply because they wanted to help. Are these the same women?

Well said @FourWalls waiting 20 years to hit a guy with charges really isn't fair especially when you consider some of these men are now in their 80s and probably can't remember what they did. I'm not positive about this, but wasn't one of the women making accusations in Hugh Hefner's mansion? I just figure any woman stupid enough to enter that place deserves what she gets ... I no I no, I shouldn't judge Hugh, right?

I was in the Navy, joined in 1979, and it was just “accepted” that I was going to hear cat calls, snide (if not obscene) remarks, and sexist taunts. I’ve never considered suing the Navy over it. As I said in another response to a discussion about the accusations, we are sending so many mixed messages that a man probably doesn’t know what to think. Women wear three band aids and call them “a bikini,” then gripe about being stared at? Women are the biggest demographic consumers of country music and buy songs like “Country Girl (Shake It for Me)” then have a fit if some guy quotes the song in a bar. One of Harvey Weinstein’s accusers signed a petition to have convicted rapist filmmaker Roman Polanski pardoned. I was molested by a relative as a teenager. I was embarrassed and pondered whether to tell my mom, knowing what she would say. I decided if I didn’t say anything right then and there who would believe me later of things got worse, so I told my mom. Sure enough, she said exactly what I thought she would: she called the relative and told him if He so much as looked at me again she would kill him. (And, at that era of my mother’s life, she WOULD have.) But it never happened again, and that’s because my “wait time” was 20 minutes (to sort things out), not 20 years.

I think people just went on following the trend of Rape accusations left and right but it's being more high-lightened now compare before. But some people are too obvious that it's away to just destroy some one's reputation.

Women can ruin an innocent man if they have one little thing against the guy. If these women are not telling the truth, they are evil and deserve jail. Your post is really a good post. I had to Tweet it.

Thank you, that was very kind! And I totally agree with you. There’s that old saying from William Congreve, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” What this year has proved is you can ruin another person’s life with one accusation.

Innocent until proven guilty seems to have gone out the door. Those men who are guilty must be shaking in their shoes.

Tavis Smiley is the latest big name to go down. PBS has suspended the show he has had since 2004.

The media is so avid about telling this sordid stories, that they don´t wait until the law checks if the accusations are true or false.

Also its going on here lots being accused and they are guilty till they are proven innocent. Its terrible but its the way it is. I just hope that they are all telling the truth also. Won´t mention the stories of this country involved but its the same thing being accused and a lot.

No one seems to care about the damage cause to the families if she is not telling the truth.

When things get really serious one must always consider the conswquences of WHAT IF... In this case the feeling of a person were not taken into consideration and the results were unfortunate and tragic.

I believe, after reading the report (see my reply to Lori’s comment elsewhere on this thread for a link to the report), that there is NO WAY the accuser/victim is lying about it.

This is too sad for words, for himself as well as for his family. I just read his last message, and I hope also that the truth was told.

They are really on quite a run now with all these allegations going on. I think it is time this sort of thing sees the light of day. I hope that Johnson's accuser was telling the truth too. Very sad.

I hear you. Women are setting the rules now on flirtation and they will end up with me like wet lettuces.
