I love candid photographs

I love pictures, I take pictures almost daily to try and capture memories. Some of my favorite pictures are not the professional ones. Don't get me wrong I love professional pictures but they don't capture the memories the way the ones we take ourselves do. Most of my favorite pictures are the candid ones. The ones I take when no one is looking or if they are looking it's taken at random and wasn't originally posed for. One of my personal favorite pictures is one from when we were on vacation in Michigan with my family. My husband was holding our son and playing with him and before he knew it they were both fast asleep on the couch. I managed to get a quick picture while they were both asleep. They both look innocent especially my son. I mean it is not the best picture of my son by any means but it holds this innocence about it that I love. I have a ton of pictures of my son and while I love all of the professional pictures they just don't hold the memories the candid ones do. My husband once took this amazing picture of my son that looks almost professional where my son saw an airplane and was pointing up and still had the dandelion in his hand he had just blown on and I love that picture too. It does look professional but it wasn't staged and that makes a huge difference. My husband and I love it because it shows our son's innocence. One day my son is going to grow up and we are going to want the reminders from when he was still small and innocent. It's not always about which pictures they look the cutest in. My son looks the cutest in his 3 year old pictures and I love them but mostly it was all staged, even though his laugh was genuine as my son is easy to make laugh and the photographer was playing with him. When I look back through pictures it's like I'm having flashbacks of my life or the life of others and the pictures where you're not faking a smile or a reaction are almost always the best pictures because they capture special moments in our lives. Smiles that aren't faked and people who are very real and are having a real moment. I like pictures that give me a real feeling and it's difficult to get a real feeling from a staged photograph. I mean we have some professional pictures that aren't really staged and do bring some form of a memory but they aren't the same as those taken in moments where we are having a real moment and not one we are trying to pose for. I have pictures of my son crying, laughing, smiling, playing, walking, sleeping...I take pictures of it all because I want to remember all of his faces and his reactions. I want to make sure I don't forget. Pictures are by far one of my favorite things. I love looking through them and remembering. Even when I look through pictures of people who are no longer around it gives me a feeling of who they might have been. I can't help but wonder who they were and what they were like and what was going through their minds at the time of the picture. I like the insight pictures can give you. I love a picture that can give you an idea of who someone was. I know it's impossible to know everything from a few pictures but even a small idea of who someone was can leave you with a warm feeling at times. I always love going to my favorite aunt's house because she has pictures everywhere of everyone in our family. There are old black and white pictures and more recent school pictures of family as well as some candid photos that were taken. Her walls and shelves are covered with pictures and I always manage to find one I haven't seen before. I feel like it's our family history out on display for everyone to see if they look hard enough. I know a lot of people aren't big on pictures but I love the memories that come from pictures and gives us a look into our lives and the lives of others.

It's hard to imagine that there was a time before photography was invented.

It really is, sometimes you'll find paintings from that time period that look a lot like photographs but it's still not really the same because they always look so serious in those.

@sissy15 The first photographed portraits were also very serious. People dressed up when they went to a photographer's studio. They didn't want to look casual. The idea of snapshots came up much later.

@MALUSE I know, it was difficult to get a candid shot when cameras first came out because they weren't exactly movable so when people went they wanted to look their best and considering that those with access to cameras often had money and wanted to be taken seriously so you were lucky to see smiles on their faces.

They really do. I barely have any baby pictures, my son has more pictures in his first year of life than I probably do in my entire life, which might be another reason why I feel the need to take so many pictures.

@celticeagle It was but my some of my older siblings have more pictures than I do. Being the youngest I kind of got forgotten in that area. My mom now says she wishes she would have taken more pictures but you can't go back.

My SIL is big on picture taking. She has a huge collage of photos of her family members. Love to look at her wall of smiles. Yes, the candid photos are the best.

@sissy15 I love to happen upon pictures of my relatives that have long since passed. They bring back so many fond memories of them.

That's how my aunt is, I love walking in and seeing all the members of my family past and present. Her whole house is covered in pictures. You can't walk anywhere in her house without finding pictures, it's amazing. Sometimes I feel like I walked into the past with all of her pictures of my grandma and my aunts and uncles. I randomly look around her house whenever I walk in lol. I have wandering eyes when I sit there and talk to her because I'm trying to look around her house, and every time I notice a picture I hadn't noticed before.

I am the same way as you. I have photos like yours above of my kids and husband in similar situations. It is so nice to look back on those precious moments today.

It is, I don't think people realize how much they are going to miss those moments and they often don't think to capture the moment not realizing how much they may enjoy seeing the pictures later.

@LeaPea2417 I think a lot of people think they'll remember but sometimes we just don't. I have forgotten a lot over the years.

@sissy15 Yes, we do change especially young children. If I didn't have the pictures, I would forget the cute baby faces my two sons had many years ago.

That is a lovely photo and I understand why you want to take lots of photos to remember all the stages of your son's growth. I remember the days when you were very careful what photos you took as each one cost to have it developed.

Thank you, and I remember those days too. Now I rarely even print photos. I store them on my computer and I use FB as a way to back them up in case for whatever reason something goes wrong with my computer or phone and I lose them. People think I post too many pictures on fb but it's partly because I use them as a backup and partly because we have a lot of family that live far enough away that they miss him growing up and this is one of the few ways they can see him.

@sissy15 FB is good in that it keeps families in touch with each other. I think Dropbox is another area where you can store photos.
