Heartburn? Try Baking Soda. But a little goes a long way!

Taken in small doses, Bicarbonate of Soda, aka Baking Soda, is a good stomach acid remedy. I have had heartburn before, taken Tums, or even a Proton Pump Inhibitor like Nexium, and nothing worked. But in a pinch, half a teaspoon of Baking Soda, in a cold glass of ice water does wonders to quickly neutralize the acid that tends be felt as heart burn. Now, to find a way to prevent acid indigestion in the first place. 1. I know onions can add insult to injury. 2. Stuff that is spicy or greasy can make it burn. It is very likely I have a sensitive constitution. So I will be trying to just say no to spicy Guacamole dip. What makes you get heart burn?

Acid reflux (heart burn) is caused by not enough acid in the stomach; not too much @lookatdesktop . Also eating too fast or not chewing the food thoroughly will cause it. The better cure is a cup of water with 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar and a few drops of honey. That can be drank before a meal, during a meal, after a meal and even at bedtime. I had a friend who was on Nexium for a long time. After trying what I suggested, he no longer uses the pills.

I have apple cider. I had green tea this morning. Lat night, after a full day of not having coffee, made a big difference. I did not have any acid. I was able actually to sleep better even though my CPAP machine is not working and I have to wait until the middle of next month for another sleep study or followup. They said I have severe central apnea. No wonder I have trouble getting a good night's sleep and have hypertension.

@nanette64 , Last night I slept on two nice pillows. Instead of just one. It seemed to help somewhat. and my wife will admit this morning that she in fact slept better last night than ever in a long while. So, if I sleep well, she does too. I may have to just save up and buy my own machine, an Auto CPAP. Since my doctor already has my results, I only need the cash and my doctor's referral. I think the auto machine is able to stay within safe pressure limits so as not to hurt using it. But I think the reason for the second followup test is because I left before they had the chance to set the right pressure. If the pressure they were using on me the last hour of the test, was their idea, I would not sleep again.

I have a weakness for Chuy’s salsa. My stomach doesn’t share my enthusiasm for it.

That's good. I never tried it but it can be helpful and will try it next time when I face this thing. I used to take ENO powder which I guess used to create from same thing. Not sure.

I guess. Baking soda is also called Sodium Bicarbonate. or Bicarbonate of Soda, not to be mistaken for Sodium Carbonate, which is strictly a poison.

Bicarbonate of Soda was what we used all the time when I was young. Fruits immediately after a meal gives me stomach problems.

I know to stay away from strong coffee or for that matter, any kind of coffee. I like coffee, in fact love it but it is certainly one of the triggers that I can try to avoid if I want not to have the acid.

It would be useful to get your Doctor to check you for Helicobacter pylori and if positive a triple course of treatment should sort you out!

I remember my grandpa used to take baking soda with water when he had heartburn. It seemed to work.

It works but the root of the problem is from triggers like spices, caffeine drinks, greasy and hot spicy foods.
