At what age does one "grow up"?

Seriously, when did you as an individual find the self confidence to just get on with your life and not care what others thought of you? When did you stop caring about "criticism"? (real or what you perceived as "real") For me, it was probably my mid-20s. I had to be taken through the wringer by some bad friends and bad boyfriends to finally say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and just find the confidence in myself to be who I am and not worry about what others think. I find it interesting (and kind of disturbing) that there are others who can live for many many MANY more decades and still worry that others are "picking on them". Why would you care even if they were? (which by the way they AREN'T) Why wouldn't you just go on and live your life with some confidence in who and what you are and ignore what you perceive to be whatever slight you think it is? How long can it take someone to grow up?

There are different types of growing up: emotionally, intellectually, responsibility, financial smarts. I don't think anyone is ever truly grown up whatever that term really means.

@NJChicaa A person could be "grown up" in terms of professional and financial responsibility yet immature in other areas. A genius can be childlike.

I prefer what that great sage James William Buffett said: I’m growing older, but NOT up. Seriously, think it depends on the person. Acting in an “adult” manner (with things like manners, responsibilities, feelings for someone else, etc.)? Some people never do. I love to joke around and enjoy the simple things, but I can “adult” if I have to.

I agree with @Johnroberts There are many different types of growing up and it might not be a matter of growing up at all. Not everyone has self confidence (that's not a matter of maturity I don't think-it's a matter of being secure-which doesn't necessarily come with aging), and some are more sensitive to things than others. Being secure usually comes from one's accomplishments in life.

I lacked self-confidence when I was young. Maybe from mid-twenties my attitude and approach changed. Over time, by the age of thirty over, I was confident of myself. I hear out what others say but I make up my own opinion about myself. I stick to my principles and never bend backwards to please anyone. That attitude has served me well and rests easy on my conscience - siva

Growing up means different things to people, I have experienced all sorts, I regard a "life experiences", these have taken their toll on me, but I still strive to accept, cope, adjust, overcome and live as best as I can.
