RIP to my fork

Recently, I went to wash the dishes from the night before and noticed that there was only one dirty fork in the sink. There should have been two forks because my husband and I had dinner together. I looked at the utensil drawer. I went to the dining table. I checked the dishwasher. It wasn't there. Then, I looked at all the kitchen counters and draws. I checked the pantry. And yes, I checked the fridge, the freezer, and even the oven. The fork was nowhere in sight. My last resort was to check the garbage. After opening the door under the sink, feeling hopeful that the fork was there in the garbage can, thinking it might have accidentally fell in there while I was emptying the plates, what I saw was a brand new garbage bag with nothing in it. I realized that we had thrown out the garbage the night before. I wanted to run outside and look through the bag to see if the fork was in fact there, only to realize the garbage had already been picked up by the truck earlier in the morning. So, there was no way to recover the fork. RIP.

Strange things happen in the kitchen when you aren't looking. My mother started buying me silver cutlery when I was 15 years old. Over the years I've got everything one needs. Yet, the latest roll call revealed that I have six spoons and six knives but only one fork left. Where have the other forks gone? It's like the single sock mystery in washing machines. I now have to use cheap no-silver forks because this special cutlery isn't produced anymore.

@lovebuglena I decided from the beginning to use my silver cutlery. I can enjoy it every day. Pity that the forks don't like to be with me and the rest of the cutlery but there are enough items which do. :-)

@MALUSE Perhaps the forks have a secret admirer from a faraway land.

I wouldn't want silver cutlery that had sentimental (and even monetary value) to disappear. I'd probably hide it somewhere and never use it. Though I'd have to remember where I hid it, so it wouldn't accidentally get thrown out.

Why was that fork so important? Don't you have a few more of them?

It didn't really hold sentimental value. I just hate it when things disappear or break or accidentally get thrown out. Plus, one less fork now. So, when many guests come over someone may be left without a fork. Also, now the knife is lonely because his girlfriend is missing in action. There is a fork that I have that holds sentimental value because it was my grandpa's favorite fork. And my grandpa is no longer here with us. I never use it. Keep in the drawer. Don't want anything to happen to it.

Oh no... Yes, I did that too before, accidentally threw some utensils inside a garbage can and too late to recover by the time I realized it was missing...

It was bugging me for a while that this happened. And when I told my husband that I can't believe we accidentally threw the fork in the garbage he told me something like "We? It was you."

@lovebuglena My husband would not even notice it was missing had I not mentioned anything to him...

We've had forks gnarled up, after falling into our garbage disposal. Of course, the garbage disposal got damaged, also! Your fork was simply ushered into a dump truck:)

Reminds me of my mom who safely keeps her special spoons and forks. They are only intended for display.

I wonder if I have all my day to day forks in the drawer. The good cutlery from Solingen are in our drawer, only use for special occasion. They are complete.

It's a good idea to keep the special cutlery away from every day use.
