The Victorians liked specialised gadgets!

The Victorians seem to have been big fans of specialised equipment and gadgets. Obviously they didn’t have all the electronic gizmos we have today – though I’m sure they would have loved them if they had – but they did like to have special things for different tasks, especially in the home. Probably they rather liked to show off that they had all the ‘correct’ utensils as well! In our family we tend to keep things rather than throw them out, so we still have a few of these bits and pieces in the backs of cupboards and they come to light again now and then. The Victorians loved special forks for dessert, special grape scissors, sugar tongs, salt spoons, jars for preserves – all that sort of thing – and different containers for different foods. While cleaning out a cupboard last week we rediscovered this, which I think is a sardine dish. It makes canned sardines seem like an exotic treat – maybe I should use it one day! I planned to buy a can of sardines yesterday but couldn’t find any that were sustainably sourced so in the end I had to buy mackerel instead. Special grape scissors! Incredible. I wonder in what way they're different from normal scissors. Can you show a photo, please? You can make a series of all the things you find in your cupboard. :-)

I don't seem to have the grape scissors to hand at the moment, though I do remember seeing them some time ago. Maybe you could ask @LadyDuck for a photo. Basically they are just pretty little scissors for snipping a small bunch of a few grapes off a big bunch at the table.

I'm slightly sorry that I disposed of a moustache cup we used to have - although I was rather worried that if I kept it, my partner might see that as a valid excuse to grow a moustache!

@Fleura The scissors are in the apartment of my mother, I will take a photo when I go there. I am sure there are photos online. They are little scissors usually decorated with grapes motif.

I love old stuff like this. I'm always wanting to delve into Mumma's cupboards to see what treasures I can discover.

Such a pretty sardine dish... I've never seen anything like that... Should be alright to put other dish in it, especially if we don't put the cover on...

Nowadays people would be rather surprised if you served sardines at a social gathering, but I guess it could be used for sushi, that's considered more 'posh'!

The cabinets in my mother apartment are full of all those things. I know she also has grapes scissors, the silver crumb brush and tray, the crystal tray with 5 different sections to serve antipasti. I wonder where we are going to put all those things.

@Fleura If my brother is not opposed I am going to sell everything in silver, it's a pain to clean and I will never use all those things.

It's funny isn't it - nowadays we just make do with mugs and plates and fingers! I have the same dilemma - at the moment I'm just keeping a lot of them and the next generation can decide!

It's a beautiful dish. I've always liked dishes and even furniture from the Victorian age.

I do too, luckily my partner is very tolerant of me filling the house with big dark wood furniture!

Speaking of sardines, I miss eating Spanish sardines.
