I wonder if this story might be closer to the truth at this time of year? Only about 90secs, and is an animated reading of the poem in the picture, written by Neil Gaiman:
We started down a rather unconventional route for our 2010 Christmas card and there was simply no turning back. The pull of the dark side was just too strong. Here's…

@pgntwo This is what I thought. When you read the Charles Dickens novels, poor kids had not a very happy childhood in the Victorian England.

Isn't it? Somebody must've had a very disappointing childhood around Christmas once...

@LadyDuck I think a child in Victorian Times had a very hard life. These days, they seem to transfer that grief onto the parents ;(

Gaiman can make you feel that way, at times. He was bored waiting in Heathrow T3 earlier in the week, so stood in the WHSmiths sneakily signing any copy of his books that he could find on the shelves... That'll give a few people a nice Christmas Surprise I found a photo of the original poem, if you prefer to read it and Form your own mental images... It's at the top of the post.

Are a lot of the poems about Christmas as bleak as that one was @pgntwo ?

@rebelann Not really. Have you watched Terry Pratchett's Hogfather on YouTube yet? He goes into the beliefs that might have made the Christmas myth what it is today...

I am sure it is, many hate Christmas time. Have to say the way we treat some people, cannot blame them for being so angry I guess, sad depressed negative outlook and what not.

I wonder if it is worse in the Northern hemisphere, the dark days of winter, vs Southern hemisphere where Christmas is in the summer...?

The name Neil Gaiman rings a bell. Has he written novels, too? I'm too tired now to check.

He has written several novels, @MALUSE, yes. I have put the original poem up as the picture to this post, if you prefer reading rather than being read to... Frohe Weihnachten!
