What Is It About the Holidays That Turns People Into Idiots?

Earlier my sister and I ventured out to Walmart and a couple other stores to finish up her Xmas shopping. It was a madhouse out. I don't know what it is about the holidays that brings everyone out in droves and causes them to behave like uncivilized idiots. This extends to people on the roads. Twice we almost got hit by cars whose drivers were not paying attention as we tried to cross the street to get from one store to another -- we had the right of way (the pedestrian light was green), and not only did the car at the intersection's turn lane not stop for us, but the car behind them also did not stop, so they just came barreling at us one after another. I may have made an obscene gesture and yelled at them. What the hell? Just because Christmas is in a few days, people can no longer obey traffic laws? With any luck, I won't have to go back out to the store again until after Christmas...but alas, I know that tomorrow evening I have to go to Raley's to pick up my prescription refill, and we are supposed to bring two side dishes and dessert to my in-laws for Christmas so I will have to go to the grocery store to get what they requested (even though they are serving plenty of food; I don't know WHY I have to bring so many things! They are even having two main courses, even though there will only be 8 of us -- 6 adults and 2 kids -- for dinner.) Honestly I don't even want to go anywhere for Christmas. I would rather stay home and just play the Sims. But, we told them we would go, so I guess we have to. I am not looking forward to spending my entire Christmas day hanging around a bunch of drunk people. I am the only adult who will be there who no longer drinks. Drunk people are incredibly annoying when you are not drinking with them. Especially my bf's older sister, who runs around screaming "WOOH!" (This is a 60-something year old lady, and her "Wooh!-ing" is irritating even when you're drunk alongside her.) So, yeah. I've concluded that Christmas brings out the worst in people. At least some people. Or it at least makes them behave like idiots. Perhaps somebody spiked their eggnog before the festivities. All I know is that this time of year is supposed to bring about feelings of goodwill toward our fellow man, but instead it has me hating people and wanting to haul up inside a cave far, far away from everybody. Perhaps I am just a grinch. Have you noticed people behaving like crazed morons lately?

I fully agree with you, it is not at all true that Christmas brings peace among humans, it brings out the worst in people. We have been outside grocery shopping yesterday and we were shocked. I am not going out until after the holidays.

I have to get groceries tomorrow (Saturday) and I am not looking forward to it. The closer to the holiday it gets, the more badly behaved people become in public.

I had seen some in the local mall. Some people don't have self-discipline if falling in line to the counter.

@Srbageldog I think it is worst here, my dear friend. It also happens in other countries.

@scarlet_woman If I didn't hate people so much, I'd go out more just to people watch. But I can't stand being around them.

I think you love people about as much as I do...possibly more. Yeah, people are stupid. I should start taking my notepad and pen with me when I go out and take notes of all the stupid around me. I could write a book.

The issue is the same here with drivers, when I'm waiting at a crossing at a junction they drive round and stop across the crossing when there's traffic in front of them even though they know they're not supposed to stop there, then the green man comes on for pedestrians to cross and we're put in a dangerous situation because we're crossing between cars that might move at any minute. When I'm on my own I cross between them, but if I have my son with me I just wait for the green man to come on again because it's not worth the risk Thankfully my family are generally not drinkers, and even those who are drinkers don't drink at family parties I like drinking when I go out with friends but the thought of drinking with my family seems insane to me

I got a good laugh out of this, because I was thinking the same thing! I call all those people dipshitidiots. Despite your travails, I hope you have a very Merry Christmas!

Haha, "dipshitidiots." I will have to remember that one! I celebrated Christmas early with my family and exchanged gifts with my partner earlier tonight (well, this morning now I guess.) So far it's been a very merry Christmas! I hope you have a Merry Christmas as well!

@Srbageldog The kids and I spent a magical day at Disney World, so it was a very merry Christmas indeed. For the kids especially! And the weather was perfect!

My relatives have told me that when the holidays come, Lake Charles becomes Stooge City with uncouth behavior from people who go shopping at the Wal Marts and other places.

Stooge City sounds like a good name for it. I think most of the world becomes that way during the holidays. Especially at WalMart!

@Srbageldog I am a fan of the Three Stooges is the reason I came up with the name Stooge City.

People really are stupid! It's uncomfortable sometimes being the only adults who don't drink. My partner usually doesn't drink too much at his family gatherings, since he still has to drive us home. But the rest of the adults get plastered and become very annoying.

The greediness is what really gets to me. Christmas may no longer be a religious holiday for me, but I hate how commercialized it's become and how greedy it makes everybody. You are smart to be hiding out at home. I wish I could hide out at home until after the new year.

It is only 3 days Christmas holiday here in Germany and people keep on buying food where their shopping carriage is full up to the brim. It seems like they are afraid food will be consumed and there´s a coming war to prepare more than enough food at home. Just in case.. LOL! It´s funny to see those people.

Yes, it is like that here too! I suppose they are preparing to feed large crowds of people, or feel they must stock up for that one day when the grocery stores will be closed.

@thelme55 That could be it. Or maybe they are like my family and bake lots of goodies (that none of us really needs to be eating!) for the holidays.

You are 100% correct. So you know what I did tonight? I went to Meijer around 10 p.m. (on purpose, lines weren't too bad later at night) and bought everything I needed for the next 3 days. I don't plan on leaving the house at all for the next 72 hours.

Ahh, smart thinking there! We will have to venture out to Winco sometime tomorrow (probably in the evening) to stock up on stuff for the next few days, then I don't plan to go anywhere else after that.)
