Fruitcake

I think fruitcake gets a bad rap. Most people roll their eyes and think yuck. I have to say I was tickled to receive fruitcake this year though. The whole family likes it and it saved me from making one. I usually make a no bake one and the kids make it disappear in about 2 days flat. But they can make almost anything disappear in that amount of time. Do you like fruit cake? Do you make one? I have no been on here in a good bit. Have had a little blood pressure trouble. I was trying to deal with it by natural means, it got a bit out of control. I ended up on BP pills that did not agree with me, went on a little hospital vacation, but am back in action now. I hope all of you are doing well.

I'm sorry that your health took you down a rough road, I hope that you're better for good now. I like fruitcake. My mother made the very best, it was moist and she made both dark as well as light. She baked hers, she did them in special square pans and she would pour sherry over the cake and then wrap it in cheesecloth, plastic wrap and then tin foil and put in in the spare fridge to "ripen" as she would call it. People would stop in around the holidays to enjoy a piece of it.

When I was small I was just like that never came close to fruits, and in matter of fact, up to these days I don't like that much fruits expect for some. On the other hand, Fruits, once they come in form of Cakes can be really delicious

That is funny, most young children do love their fruit, now vegetables, that is a different story.

I knew I hadn't been seeing you around, but I had no idea why. I am happy to see you again and know that you are doing better than you had been. I had some problems with my blood pressure meds, too. My doctor switched my medications twice. The first one was causing me more problems along the allergy lines so the doctor switched me again. (The dosage is still not right, but at least I am not having allergic reactions to this new one.) Oh, to answer your first questions, I am one of the people who say "Yuck!" to fruitcake! There is not enough money on the planet to get me to eat that... stuff. (grinning at you!)

Are you sure? People say that until they start seeing the cash in front of them. I hope they get your meds right, it is no fun being switched back and forth.

@mom210 Yes, I am very sure! IDK what is in fruitcake but I am allergic to something in it. I could go the rest of my life without ever seeing another one! Yeah, me, too. I am taking two tablets of Clonidine twice a day, once when I wake up and again when I go to bed. For some reason, about two hours after taking it in the morning, my blood pressure nose dives, making me dizzy and I feel sick. That is about my first break time at work, so I go sit in the breakroom for 15 minutes and I feel fine when I get back to work. (very strange!)

@mom210 True. I really should shed some pounds to bring my blood pressure down instead of relying on pills, but I LOVE to eat!

So sorry your having blood pressure issues, I have been dealing with them for years. Hopefully yours is under control now. As for fruit cake, I don't like it but my husband loves it. He made me buy him one so he could have it just for himself.

Yes, I have been on meds for years. I take 360 - 420 mg a day depending on how high it gets. It sucks thats why they wanted me to move to sea level in the hopes that it will regulate a little better.

@mom210 I am sorry, I take Diltiazem, I am allergic to all bp meds but these have the least affect on me. I have found that stress makes mine much worse, if I get upset it jumps, if I have an infection anywhere in my body it goes up. Could be in a tooth, sinus, anything makes it go up. I really have to watch my salt intake, I am only allowed 1000 gr a day which is nothing considering everything has got sodium in it. Cucumbers are good and I do deep breathing if mine gets really bad. Let me know if I can help you out, like I said, I have been dealing with mine for years. The new doc here said she is willing to try Zolof or some kind of anxiety pill with me because she said a lot of times that helps. Also, don't take things with decongestants in them if you don't have to, that will raise it as well.

I don't make fruitcake or like it. I prefer fresh fruit. Easy to eat and no baking involved. I am ready for the Garden of Eden.

That is very true, it depends on how moist it is, if it has the booze in it. Mine did use the candies, the kids like them.

So that was the reason. Hope you will be in very good health this year. I love fruitcake. BUT I only eat a little bit of it every now and then. Have to say that I like it best (I think) with respect to all other fruitcakes. I read the recipe, sounds simple, but I rather go buy it in the store. It is not expensive there even if its quality might not be good (but others who came visiting me, tasted, and told me the quality of those fruitcakes I served, were really good.

It really depends on how it is made if I like it or not. If it is moist and has nuts, and a lot of the Fruitcake fruits in it and soft like Banana bread, etc than I will give it a try, but if it is hard and dry no Thanks.

I like fruit cakes but not those using dried fruits and very sweet ones, those are too sweet for me, though some taste quite good too. Have you found any natural remedies that help with your blood pressure? I agree it's be better not to take the pills if possible. Hope you will find an effective and healthy way to deal with it.

oh so sorry to hear that. i am so sick of the blood pressure thing myself. if i take the pills, and been having to, they make my blood pressure go down so much and i can barely move yet i am supposed to move a bit for my arthritis pain, etc. and if i don't take it now it goes up to 200 plus. scary. as for fruit cake i absolutely love it. but never made my own

Yes that is very high. I am the same way, I feel bad when it gets to high, and even worse when I take their pills. Somehow I am just suppose to forget what those pills did to me and just on board with new ones. Sometimes I am just not sure the Dr has MY best interest in mind.

they are not that hard, it mostly depends on your own tastes since so many people have different ideas on what a good one needs.
