Favorite "Highway" Songs #9 - "Life is a Highway"

Just think, you only have to read this nine more times! My girlfriend and I have purchased a van, and we are going to travel around, camping and doing/seeing cool things. In celebration, @JohnRoberts suggested a countdown of my favorite songs with "highway" in the title. We are at #9: "Life is a Highway" by Tom Cochrane. Tom Cochrane is the former leader of 80's alternative rock band Red Rider (one of my favorites. Perhaps you remember "Lunatic Fringe" or "Human Race?") Born in Winnipeg, Cochrane has won eight Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy's) and is in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame (he is also an Officer of the Order of Canada. Yeah, he's a pretty big deal there.) As a solo artist, Cochrane scored a smash hit in 1991 with "Life is a Highway," which was a bit more rooted in straight up rock and roll than his output with Red Rider. "Life is a Highway" was indeed a smash: #1 in Canada, and #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 (and #6 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Chart as well.) As if that weren't enough, country band Rascal Flatts covered the song in 2006, taking it to #7 on the Hot 100. Interestingly, this version was not released as a country single, but country radio stations played it anyway, sending the song to #18 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart (pop radio got involved, too: it reached #9 on the Pop 100. The cover has sold over three million copies in the US.) The song has also been covered by Chris LeDeux, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Cochrane is probably still cashing checks!
