Cold waves and global warming

An ongoing study of the French National Center for Meteorological Studies relayed by several French media is linking directly the cold waves we had in Europe in January 2017 and in North America this month to the global climatic change. To explain it shortly, the scientists have identified a double phenomenon : 1) a rise of the temperature at the Poles, twice more important in the Arctic than in the rest of the planet, according to a NOAA study from 2015. At the end of 2015 the North Pole had positive temperatures (above 0°C) while the average temperature observed between 1958 and 2002 was -28°C. 2) This rise creates some perturbations of the jet-stream, the high altitude airstream forming a natural barrier between the cold air masses from the Pole and the warm air masses rolling up from the Equator. The jet-stream works like an elastic that extends when the difference of temperatures between each airstream decreases, and its route becomes sinusoidal permitting to the cold airstream to reach Europe and North America. The study of this double phenomenon will continue in France until 2019. I believe that this ongoing study was deserving a post. Done. Picture in the public domain.

There will still be people who will not believe this.

Criticizing science facts is not new, there were also people who did not believed Galileo when he wrote that the Earth was moving around the Sun.

@topffer So very true, they believe that the earth and all living creatures were made in 7 days, but they do not believe the scientific facts.

@LadyDuck There is a difference between scientists and believers.

It is interesting, I had read the same scientific study and this makes sense.

Maybe a bit early, as these conclusions are not definitive, but it seems logical enough to deserve a post.

@topffer It seems logical to me.

I'm glad they continue to do such studies - there are still people who think this whole notion of global warming is ridiculous (one said this was just the natural course of the earth - we just happen to be in part of the cycle where it can be most felt - was this person's argument). Whatever the case, I know I can feel that there are changes - and judging from what is being said about the weather/temps around the world, it seems there is indeed some drastic changes going on.

@topffer I am no scientist, but it seems to me that a change would be gradual - from what I am reading, this warming is happening way too rapidly - like you said, it's not a natural warming. We have been changing the planet (not in a good way) and it seriously is up to us to save the planet - I only hope more people would be up for the challenge. It doesn't help that the Donny guy makes a joke of it - I can see how crossing the pond would give better support!

@topffer Yep - and with the bans and regulations he's lifted, he's not doing the planet any favors . I just hope the environment can be happy and healthy again!

@much2say The problem is that they cannot have anymore public funds in your country for their researches. I suppose Trump supporters are happy telling that they were wasting the tax payer money. Our colleges/research centers are happy to welcome them. So everybody is happy.

There must be something in the Meteorological study. What surprises me is that the North Pole had positive temperatures .

Yes, it is surprising, but at the end of December 2015 the meteorological records are giving positive temperatures in the Arctic.

I read about this study 5 to 7 years ago (just in general about the temperature changing at the North Pole), from a magazine which had some links to some airlines (can't remember which one!). Back then, we travelled a fair bit so we had those magazines monthly.

Which is new here is the correlation done between the rise of the temperature at the Pole, and the behavior of the jet-stream. It has yet to be confirmed by more observations.

Who is the one ignoring science? If he/she ignores the science, he should not use any scientific things like, computers, trains, aeroplanes. They are all the by product of science. I am very much worried that there are still some foolish who doesn't believe in Science! Hope they will believe in that soon!

@creativeaashish According to a recent poll, the three first words coming to an American mind to qualify this one are idiot, incompetent and liar.

@sjvg1976 It is why I posted this. Even if it is a bit early for definitive conclusions, this study seems logical and well done.

Here we are all responsible for the Global Warming. We are cutting down trees, habituated to use artificial means of transport. Even for domestic use we all totally dependent on Electricity and other means. This resulted in the establishment of Industries which are releasing quite harmful gases. We are using plastic which is very harmful. We are using paper plates and cups which affect our health adversely. We are becoming weak to tolerate even a small rise in the temperature though we are not doing any effort to minimize the temperature. We are killing the nature and we are killing ourselves.

You are right, but I think that a large part of people are aware that stopping the global warming is a world challenge for the survival of the generations to come. Denying it is selfishness : it may have no major consequences for us, but it will turn to a disaster for our children.
