We will have a travel to USA in February this year. We plan to drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles by CA-1 and US-101. I heard that CA-1 is under construction in some parts, it seems it is the Big Sur. However, it is not like what I look at Google Maps. This is why I think we will drive US-101 in some parts since CA-1 is not available all the way. We plan to stay on the way for three nights. It will not be in a hurry and tiring and we can enjoy the views. Now I wonder whether I should book the lodge in advance or book it when we arrive there. As so far it is hard for us to know when we can arrive there since we drive in a foreign country. If I book the lodge in advance, then we have to catch it up according to our plan. If not, then everything will be relaxing but I am afraid it will not be easy to find a place to live when we want to have a break. Would you share me more information and experience about it? Thanks a lot!

The policy of the hotel usually is that if you cancel by a certain time of the day, you do not pay the booked room. We usually booked, just to be sure to have a room where to stay, it happened we had to cancel and stop on the road.

I know. It is fine to cancel it a day or two in advance. But it is not good enough for us this time as we can't depend on the public traffic.

@LadyDuck If so, it will be better. But I checked Booking.com and it allows to cancel two days before or something like that.

@youless We canceled the same day by 4 pm, but we had several Hotel Cards that allowed us to do this.

We don't go with a tour agency. Otherwise I don't have to worry about so much since they will manage everything well

I think the travel agency will guide on this concern. I heard that most families in your country book to travel with the help travel agency's staff. Have a safe trip!

We don't go with a tour agency. In fact some of us prefer to travel by ourselves since everything will be relaxing and we can make our own travel plans. I don't like following others and traveling with a group of people.

@youless It is nice to hear that. I prefer to travel without the assistance of a travel agency.

You are on tour. Nothing will be difficult if you are on tour. This is meant for some difficulties also. Take it as a challenge and try to plan as you go ahead. If you are afraid of touring in a foreign country then follow the advance booking etc.,in a routine manner.

It is a big challenge for us as we can't depend on the public traffic so much

I live in the general area you're planning to travel through. I'll see what I can find out about the road construction.

@youless Are you planning to visit Hearst Castle and also stop in the little town of Cambria?

@youless Cambria has a few motels, but you'll find more a few miles down the road at Morro Bay. Morro Bay has a lot of restaurants that serve fish. San Simeon would be a very nice spot to stay. Cambria is a great shopping town. If you have a few extra minutes you might want to drive through it. You'll love Solvang. It's one of my favorite places, so is Santa Barbara come to think of it. Of course I love to shop and both are great shopping places. Solvang for the Danish themed items and Santa Barbara for designer stuff and one of my favorite places to shop, thrift shops. Hearst Castle is beautiful, but in a way it's a monument to excess. I look at all the things that Hearst accumulated and the huge "home" he built and I think of all the people he could have helped with that money, I would day dream of all the good that money could have done....and to think there is more crates of things that haven't been opened yet. All the hungry that could be fed, the homeless that could have a roof over their head....just a portion of the money that went into building the castle could have helped so many people! Sorry, since my own home burned down three months ago today I tend to get on my soap box now and then. Anyway you would do an awful lot of walking if you were to go to Hearst Castle. I will say your travel plans are very smart. I don't do well driving for long periods of time when we finally stop I can hardly get out of the car and walking hurts like crazy. Night driving is an invitation for an accident. I try to not drive at night myself. The last accident I had was at dusk and it was very very close to dark. I was run into by a 300 pound wild pig. Fortunately there wasn't too much damage to my car, but the wild pig didn't survive. You're very wise not to drive in the dark. I'll be checking the construction on highway one and will let you know what I find out. Happy New Year!
