How do you know if someone is mature or not?

I was reading about maturity. It was mentioned that if one buys books more than he buys clothes, he could be considered as mature. If someone thinks that taking drugs is not a cool and it is something not necessary to appear 'modern', then he could be considered mature. The one who realizes that everyone is not your friend. People come and go. One who realizes that one came alone in this world and that he would leave this world alone. Therefore, there's no point stressing over lost relationships. One can keep only what is meant to stay. What are your criteria for defining maturity in a person?

It is a very good point. The one who could show empathy could be considered as mature. There are less number of people who show empathy.

Yes, you are right. You mean to say the one who shows empathy could be considered as a mature person. Although, such persons are less in numbers.

I consider a mature person someone who knows how to take decisions. Someone who uses rationality and does not jump to conclusions.

Yes, you are very right that the one who could take decisions with rational thinking and is decisive could be considered as a mature person. An indecisive person could not only land himself in trouble but others also.

Oh dear, that is a tough one. I think it is a good point you make about friends. Thinking about deeper things (once in awhile) is another good one Concern for others at least some of the time, another one

@FayeHazel Digging deeper in a negative sense could also be termed as poking your nose into affairs of others, which is not a good habit. A person with negative bend of mind will go deeper into a thing just to insult the other person, in my view.

Yes, you are right that if you dig out deeper into a thing (in a positive sense), it shows that you are curious and it is a sign of maturity. Yes, concern for others and showing empathy is another important point, which we find in a mature person.

@dpk262006 True, actually now that I think, digging deeper (negative fashion) may be immature. Interesting how that changes depending on the motive of the person

Maturity doesn't mean you are old already. There are old people who are still immature. Meaning, they don't know how to forgive people and thinks in a box only.

Maturity displays when action comes. True maturity persons are not by word, but by their deeds.

Yes, you are very right that action speaks louder than one's words. Therefore, how a person reacts to a particular situation, will reveal his actual maturity level.

It depends on the situation. In each situation, if he/ she can consider practical steps to deal with it, they will be matured enough.

Maturity in a sense, is relative to how certain people look at certain things (I think). One can be mature in certain areas of their life, but remains immature in others. For example, religious people or scholars, they could be terribly mature in their ways of thinking about life in general, but if you watch them with animals or odd things, they might surprise you.

Yes, you could say that maturity differs from person to person. It is also correct that one may not be mature in each and every field. You are right that scholars etc. may be master in their own field but they may not show same level of maturity in other aspects of life.
