AKC National Championship

For all the doggie lovers out there, the Championship was on the Animal Planet channel last night. It was held in Florida with a winning prize of the $50,000 (highest ever). There were 8,000 dogs in 7 categories. Now since I'm not into watching anything but the Working and Herding Categories, I was surprised at the overall winner. A Cocker Spaniel named Striker took the prize. Not my type of doggie. One of the things I found interesting was that a statistic was given stating that 6 million dogs die of cancer each year. Not that I find that surprising considering the crap that is in most dog foods (like human). Cancer is the leading cause at 50% of death in dogs over the age of 10. Unless you can afford 'the good dog food', you have to make your own to insure the wellness of your dog. A dog must have 40% protein, 50% veggies and 10% starch. Protein: turkey, beef or boneless chicken. Veggies: carrots, green beans, peas, celery. Starch: potatoes. Fresh veggies are better but if you use canned veggies, make sure you check the salt content; bad, bad, bad. And definitely no seasonings, butter or oil. Just boil a pot with the meat, veggies and potatoes in it; let it cool and then feed. You can freeze any remaining amounts for later dinners. I was kinda unhappy that my favorite breeds: German Shepherd, Border Collie, Akita and the Alaskan Malamute weren't the winner. Bummer.

That is surprising one of those breeds didn't win. Cocker Spaniels are nice dogs too. Though they can also be aggressive. My grandparents had a cockapoo and he was a great dog around people he was familiar with, but bring on the younger generation and he wasn't thrilled with them. I had a Border Collie, wonderful dog. I never made my own dog food. It wasn't until I started blogging that I even heard of making my own. Neither of my dogs liked vegetables. I bought Benefil for a while, then changed back to Ol' Roy. They spit out the veggies in Benefil all the time. Getting them to eat it was like getting a child to eat their veggies. Didn't happen. They liked Ol' Roy and at least it didn't go to waste.

Yeah, Ol' Roy is what we fed to the 106 dogs here at the animal shelter @just4him .

Don't forget eggs, I love making egg soup for us, although the kitties are picky both Ally and I love em. And I never use spices while cooking, I can always add what I like after the kritters get their share.

Oh yeah, I make egg soup a lot @nanette64 I've been using the organic bone broth from Costco, there are no spices in it, Ally loves it. Why are cats always so dang picky? yeah, they don't really like my soup that much so I stopped trying to give em any.

@rebelann I know. My cats drive me crazy; especially when they love something and of course I buy more of it and then they don't touch it.

Even deer living in the forests die of cancer. It's not only the food which is responsible.

I think everything including the land, water, plants and everything is being poisoned @MALUSE .

@nanette64 This is one aspect. On the other hand, people have never lived so long as now and never have so many old people been healthy. This aspect must not be forgotten. A lot has still to be done. But the fact that, for example, infant mortality has gone down dramatically in the developed countries of the world is a great asset.

@nanette64 poor coco had lumps here and there. a small one on her head even. 4 years before i had had what the vet had called a tag removed from her neck. but no one said anything about cancer. she could have had that for years.

Could you feel any lumps anywhere @bunnybon7 ? A lot of times they will show up behind the dogs front legs or along the neck.

That's so sad about cancer in dogs. I had no idea it was so high. I feed my dog pedigree, but now I'm not sure if it's good or not.

Reading the label for its ingredients is critical @misunderstood_zombie . It should not have any gluten, grains (especially corn), fillers, salt etc. Taste of the Wild is a good one. It's $14-$49 for a 5-30 lb bag. But there are others too.
As pet parents, you probably spend a lot of time thinking about the food your dog eats: What are the best organic dog foods? Which brands offer the best nutrition? What flavors does your pup like the best? Which foods offer the best cost-value balance? We’
