What interesting events took place in past years on January 2nd? I didn't realize that this event happened so long ago. On Jan. 2nd, 1900, Secretary of State, John Hay, announced the "Open Door Policy" to begin trading between the U.S. and China. What I do remember, from my childhood, which was not THAT long ago, is that things that were labeled "made in China" were considered to be of poor quality. Now we know differently. Today there are many expert craftsmen in China who make good quality products. Something else that happened on Jan. 2 , 1935 Bruno Hauptmann went on trial for the kidnapping and murdering of the 20 month old son of Charles Linbergh. He was found guilty and executed.

It might interest you to know that in the Philippines we have a Camp John Hay. Name after pres. Theodore Roosevelt's sec. of state. Built by the US military and defense department in 1903. It was use as a rest and recreation facility for American soldiers serving in the Far East. It also serve as a summer vacation residence for the US ambassador to the Philippines.
