Northern Flicker

This is one I don't seem to get here often...but having said that, this one's been here for a few hours now. I'd been shooting some photos of a red-bellied woodpecker that I see every couple of days, and then suddenly this one showed up and decreed the suet feeder belonged to it. Doesn't seem to be too inclined to share with the red-belly or the downy woodpeckers I get here...or anyone else, really. Unfortunately, I saw a few starlings out there feeding on the ground...I really don't like having those greedy fat ***** around.

@JolietJake Do you ever see starling very often? My grandma said they invade other bird's nests and eat their eggs or kill their young. She didn't like them, at all

Oh, a bird. I thought this was about movies we watched when I was a kid.

Blue jays tend to be bullies as well.

@JolietJake I don't have a bird feeder out this year (a certain golden turd destroyed my feeder last fall), but when I have had one in the front yard blue jays would regularly come and chase the other birds away.

Cool looking. Do they not fly north or south or whatever during the winter? All of our birds seemed to have vanished here (dont blame em one bit).

Some flickers are migratory, but they are year-round in my area

As long as they stay on the ground, I don't mind them cleaning up the droppings...They show up in swarms...

What an interesting bird! I've never seen one like it here, I'm guessing they must not be native to these parts.

Wow, that's a really nifty pic .... oh, er, ummm, it's a really groooovy pic. I've gotten a couple of shot of mourning doves but those are just about the only birds that hang around here, I'd hoped to see a grackle or two but they don't come around much anymore. Now if only I could get a shot of a grackle or for that matter a roadrunner, I've actually gotten to see one close up once but I didn't have my camera out with me.

Yes!!!! Have you heard these birds make their crazy call? For the last week or two Northern Flickers have come onto my deck. Wow they are big compared to the sparrows. So gorgeous. Rather startling to see one above my front window- I think there must be bugs in the drain pipe. They are common here but I find them lovely to watch.
