Favorite "Highway" Songs #6 - "Roll On Down the Highway"

Yesterday, we did, briefly, hit the highway for a trial run in our van dwelling plan. To celebrate our intentions, @JohnRoberts suggested a countdown of my favorite songs that have "highway" in the title. We are at #6: "Roll On Down the Highway," by one of the all-time great Canadian bands, Bachman Turner Overdrive. BTO's 1974 hit, "Roll On Down the Highway," begins at the Ford Motor Company, which commissioned guitarist Randy Bachman and bassist Fred Turner (also known as C.F. Turner) to write a song for television commercial purposes. Unfortunately, the car company declined to use any of the band's submissions. Oh well. Written by Turner and drummer Robbie Bachman, "Roll On Down the Highway" was featured on the band's hit 1974 album, Not Fragile, and became a Top 20 hit for the group, reaching #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 (and #4 in their native Canada, and #22 in the UK, their final hit in that country.) I've linked to a live television performance from 1975, most likely Canadian TV. Enjoy! (Canadian highway rolling info verified by Wikipedia)

I had that on a 8-track! I used to listen to it on my portable 8-track player in my bike basket when I was about 10 years old!! BTO was one of my favorites.

I had it on vinyl. I recorded it onto my portable cassette recorder. Used to walk around blasting it. Neighbors hated me!

John used it in his suggestion for the series, but there is no way it wouldn't have made the cut anyway.

I like it better than "Takin' Care of Business," which was a bigger hit.

I've heard this song, and though it's not my favorite, it's so upbeat, that I have to like it a little.

I think that some people do prefer some of their other hits more.

That album...the opening track (Not Fragile) has such a heavy bass sound...always loved that

I was just mimicing that bass riff for my girlfriend! She didn't appreciate it.

I love "Let it Ride." BTO does get love here on the site, but probably not nearly enough.
