Sugar Detox

January 8, 2018 8:35am CST
Today is day one of a sugar detox for me. After the holidays, I could definitely stand to lose a few pounds, but that's not why I am doing it. I just want to see how I feel if I stop the sugar. I've noticed as I get older that I feel pretty rotten when I eat too much sugar. Sometimes I'll wake up feeling hungover without having had any alcohol. It's because of the sugar, I'm sure. So I just decided to see how I feel if I cleanse my system of the sugar. I'm not following a specific hard core sort of thing. Rather, I'm making changes that I know are an improvement over what I was doing before. I'm not completely cutting out carbs, but I am going to be limiting portions of the bad carbs (i.e. pasta), filling up on veggies, protein, and fruits. My biggest worry about starting this was coffee. Although I don't usually make it super sweet, it is usually a little sweet. So today, I made a homemade sugar free chocolate syrup to put in it with my half and half for a little "sweet".... All I did was mix some cocoa powder, water, and added just a little unsweetened applesauce to give it a tiny bit of sweet. Is it amazing? no.... but it does give my coffee just that little something to help me start on this little journey.... Normally, with my coffee, I have something sweet like a granola bar. Today's breakfast: oatmeal with blueberries. Very yummy. Very filling. More filling than my normal granola bars. i forget how much I enjoy oatmeal (as long as it has those delicious blueberries!). I looked at that Whole30 thing. For me, that just wouldn't work. If I try something extreme, I feel more deprived. And I'm less likely to stick with it. Long term, I think moderation is key. I don't plan to never have sugar again.... But I would like it to be less of the norm. I met a woman at Target yesterday who said that what she had been doing for 6 months was having no sugar Monday through Friday, but then allowing herself to have it on the weekends. I think she has the right idea. I'm starting this at a time when it should be doable.... There are no holidays. No parties. There is book club soon, that may be tough. But I'm just looking at 30 days. Surely I can do this for 30 days.

Awesome. Are you just cutting out refined sugar but still eating natural sugar like in fruits? Best of luck. I am sure it will be a good change!

yes, exactly. i think there's nothing wrong with eating fruit. i've never bene one to eat a lot of fruit. so it's not like i'm going to overdo it on fruit. though, that first day, i think i had 3 apples. ha ha.

I'm not a sugar lover, so rarely have it and don't miss it. Salt is my downfall. lol

You are right about not going for an extreme diet, I am like you, if I feel deprived I stop the diet. I like my coffee without sugar, only a little half and half time by time. For me it's hard to give up dark chocolate. I do not eat a lot, but a little piece every evening.

@LadyDuck i've been snacking on these little things called cacao nibs this week. just having about 5-7 of them. they are unsweetened roasted cacao beans..... they smell of chocolate, but are bitter. they just give me just enough of a chocolate flavor to help me over the hump... for now....

I do think it is a good idea especially as we get older to get rid of that build up, not just sugar but all of it.

I think you are off to a good start with your sugar detox. I was concerned about the coffee part too when I started getting away from sugar. I wish you all the luck in the world. Let us now how it goes for you.

I am like you about following someones diet plans, I fail. I do my own and I usually make it. Back when I lost 30 pounds, I laid off the diet one day a week and ate what I wanted. Good luck, I am sure you can do 30 days.

It's usually not what we eat, as it is how much. I went five years, without sugar and felt pretty good. Once I started cheating a little, I found out that I'm actually a diabetic! Now, I'm on medications for this and I do eat sugar in very small quantities, less often. My blood glucose levels are great:)
