Let's Talk About Winter in Florida

As a follow up to providing hurricane updates to all of my friends on myLot and outside of Florida (back in September), I thought it would be entirely appropriate to provide an update on the cold weather that has affected Florida this past week. While those of us that live in Florida expect no sympathy from those in the Northeast (or other parts of the US experiencing freezing temperatures), it is worthy of sharing with you what it is like to experience cold weather with people who either have never experienced it, or have experienced it but moved here to get away from it. I feel as though I am qualified to write on this topic, for the following 3 reasons: 1. I spent three months living in Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost city in the US and well above the Arctic Circle. 2. I spent 2 years living on a mountaintop in Colorado, at an elevation of 12,000 feet, which in my opinion was the coldest place on earth. 3. I am complaining and moaning about the weather, just like everyone else that I am about to describe below. The first thing you need to know is that the only thing people have spoken about this past week is the fact that it has been cold here in Florida. That’s it. Nothing else. Kids have been neglected, dogs have not been walked, and cats have not been fed, because it has consumed the lives of every Floridian in the state. If you conduct any business in Florida from out of state, my guess is your calls and emails have been unreturned, and if they have, 100% of them have a reference to the weather. No conversation has been had that doesn’t revolve around the weather, and no conversation will be had this week that doesn’t concern the weather from last week. The difference between the hurricane and the cold weather is that for the most part, there are strategies that should be followed in order to survive a hurricane. With the cold weather, you would think that no one has ever seen a thermometer that has dropped below 65 degrees (18C). And for most Floridians, they truly have never seen a thermometer drop below 65 degrees. People do not know what to do with themselves. They are bringing out jackets that are either too big, too small, out of fashion or simply don’t know how to actually button or zipper it. Most don't own anything thicker than a sweatshirt. They don’t seem to know how to turn on the heat in their homes, or it hasn’t been turned on in so long that is gives off an odor that makes people think that the house will go up in flames. The only thing I have seen improve is my Chinese neighbor’s English, when I overheard her say “It’s cold out here, I’m freezing my F’n a$$ off”. During this time however, I have found some new people who I hate (envy), again, just for the time being, similar to those people who had hurricane shutters for their windows – and those are the people who have fireplaces in Florida. I look at you as you stay warm in your home with no blankets, hats or sweatshirts, just marshmallows to roast - and I get bitter because I refuse to even turn on the heat in my home. I make my girlfriend and kids suffer because I consider it wrong to have to use anything other than the A/C. My guess is the people who own fireplaces in Florida are the same people that have hurricane shutters for their windows. Bas-turds. The only good thing about this weather is the fact that it didn't snow here in Florida. Oh, wait...it did! Dammit! You know what I love about snow? Not a darn thing. That's why I live in Florida! Oh, and one other good thing about the weather. Our one week of winter here in Florida is now over, and we will be back to our normal tropical warmth and sunshine this week. So all you northerners can just suck it! Haha, just kidding, I love all of you!

In England we consider ourselves to be lucky if the thermometer hits 18 {celsius} on a summer's day! Quit your whining!

But it's what us Floridians do when it gets cold...we whine! Because we don't know what else to do. We don't know how to handle the cold.

@Poppylicious Yea, we would love to be wrapped in a big blanket and coddled! But guess what? It's back to being hot and muggy again! It rained all day yesterday, and is forecast to rain again today. No wonder so many people here are getting sick....first it's freezing cold, then it's blazing hot. We'll probably be cold again by the weekend.
10 Jan 18
@moffittjc Awww, now I just want to wrap the whole state of Florida in a cosy blanket, rock you on my knee and croon, there, there! ... you big babies! Hope it's warming up for you now. :)

When it's cold is very cold even in Florida, but it is true that usually it does not last. We had a serious thunderstorm during the night () today it looks like an early Autumn day. It's a weird weather. Warm, no snow, thunderstorm in winter. I understand nothing anymore about the weather.

We can no longer count on consistent weather patterns like in days of old. We seem to have too many weather extremes these days. One day scorching hot, the next day freezing cold. Rain one week, drought conditions the next. It's just crazy!

Thanks for that report. Only one week with that sort of temperature? (Guess one week is bad enough. I know the feeling. We suddenly got hit with Antarctica weather for several days in the middle of summer last year! Everyone was shocked.)

We had some balmy weather here in the northeast. Actually put my windows down in the car to enjoy the fresh warmer air as I drove along. Once we hit 40's here it is time to break out the flip flops (for some that is).

@moffittjc flu knows no weather that will keep it at bay. We have had outbreaks of it. One of my dear clients just passed from it. I am trying to keep it from visiting our home. Both Little Miss and I have had the flu shot, my husband didn't have it. Hopefully we will be spared. My eldest daughter is still recuperating from a bout of it. Been over 2 weeks since she came down with it. You call 30 degrees bitter cold? LMAO. Come up here during the sub zero weather and we will compare. LOL.

@ElusiveButterfly 30 degrees is bitter cold for us when you realize that it hardly ever gets down to 30 degrees! When you're used to winter temperatures in the 60s, it's hard to handle the 30s. So, yes, to us that's bitter cold! And no, I don't want to experience your sub-zero weather! You can keep it, okay!

We had some nice mild temperatures over the past two days (highs near 70), so it was a welcome relief from the bitter cold we have been experiencing. But that was short-lived, as another cold front came through last night and now we'll be back down in the low 30s again. It's no wonder so many people here are getting the flu when the temperature keeps fluctuating so wildly like it has been doing.

Where you live, is the summer time also your rainy season? Here in Florida, summer means lots of rain for us. Usually, this time of year is our dry season (it's winter here right now), but we've had a very wet year this year, including this winter so far.

@moffittjc Very basically we're supposed to have a hot dry summer and cool wet winter - like parts of California; also Spain, Greece, etc. At school we were told we had a 'Mediterranean' climate. If we plan our outdoor concerts between late November and end of March we'd be unlucky to have a wet night.

and we love you too. and your fun posts. frankly i hate the weather in Florida. to me there is never a good day. way back in late 80's when i lived here a while, i couldn't afford air conditioning but i could breathe back then without it . still the heat was awful and working where i worked outside mostly was terrible also. i had to move to AZ but was sick there most of the first months due to the heat. because of the dryness . now when i should be there because of my lungs, i am stuck here the irony huh. yes Florida people complain but i say if you are able to be else where, why aren't you?

Just like California - how homes here aren't really equipped with a/c because we don't need it. Well, summers WE DO NEED IT. Well technically not necessary but definitely nice. And we used to never turn on the heater and I refuse to use the heater, but now every morning- I need my portable heater. Some nights my dad turns on the furnace for the entire house.

@moffittjc Yes! No a/c here at my fiancés place and it's relatively newer than my house by a lot. I believe this house is built in 98! There is a central air and heat though. My parents' installed a/c a couple years ago. They had central air and heat too, home is way older. Most homes are just central air but now newer homes, yes I believe they may have air conditioning now!

Do they really build homes in California without a/c? That's crazy! Even in Florida, they build homes with heat, even though most people will never, ever need it. But it's there just in case. I think the same should be with a/c. Everyone should have a/c in their house, whether they need it or not. Just in case that day comes when it is needed.

I think what makes our cold spells seem so much colder is the fact that our humidity is so high. I used to live in Colorado on the top of a mountain that had snow all year long, and it would be 20 degrees there and we'd be outside in shorts and t-shirts, because the air was so dry. Here in Florida, it will get down to 60 and I feel twice as cold as I did in Colorado, and the only thing I can think of is that the high humidity has to factor in somehow.
