Yes I did it!

I realize that I look terrified. I was. But I did it. I got my body up into that saddle and I sat up there and tried to breathe. I wanted to wear a shorter, smaller coat and no hat but it was cold. I had to have help getting off cause to get off the horse I had to put all my weight onto my bad leg. My knee would not support that idea so I humbled myself and got help. The horse- Rebel is his name- was a good sport about allowing me to sit and shake up on his wooly back.

It's possible Rebel thinks you're funny. So now that you got that outta your system do ya think you'll do it again?

Yeah, about that knee @sallypup maybe horse back riding isn't such a good idea.

@rebelann Good question. I think or my sane me thinks I had better figure something out about my trashed knee cap before I try such a stunt again. Fear is not fun to live with.

Wow ! How did you come to ride Rebel - what an adventure - and how was the ride? I've only ridden a horse once - it was my friend's horse. It was a tall one and I was terrified (but I heard a horse senses fear ).

@sallypup Ah, so you grew up riding horses - how neat your dad was a cowboy ! Oh my goodness - I can certainly understand that a crash from the past would stir up those feelings. Well then you really should be proud of yourself for getting on Rebel on this day - you conquered those feelings and had some fun .

@much2say I'm not sure that I conquered my feelings. I did come to a point where I can now think on whether I can do this feat again.

@much2say I loved riding a horse when I was a kid. My Dad was a cowboy. I have never shaken the need to ride a horse but now I am older. This time the feel of being off the ground and the feel that falling would really not be fun is much more pronounced than when I was a kid and did most anything without a thought.. Yes horses do sense fear. I had fun and yet it was more of a dare situation than the feeling of I could do this all day! Feeling afraid should not be made fun of any more than feeling joy but its a hard one to deal with. I am also more fearful than many people cause I admit to having PTSD from a bad horse crash that happened over 20 years ago. I guess that feel of falling and hurting never totally leaves a person.

While I applaud you for overcoming the pain and the fear I am asking myself why? I do love horseback riding but haven't done so in years, more because the occasion hasn't arisen. I did have to climb into my brothers very high truck the other day when we were there and I realized that it hurt my bad knees to do that soo I suspect these days I would also find it painful to climb into the saddle. It was a brave thing to do but as your friend I can't help saying, don't do it again!! lol By the way I love seeing a picture of you, now I know what you look like.

@sallypup When I fell the other day and had to think about how I was going to get up with all the parts of me that don't work right, I really felt my age and usually I don't even though my knees are shot!! I do know one thing, walking and exercising in the pool is so good for me and we haven't done that for almost a month and we need to get back to it right away!!

@BelleStarr Exactly what happens to me when I fall down or attempt to get onto the ground- its a total nightmare. The pain in my knees makes it a total help!! How to get up again? If I am not near a fence or something else to grab I am pretty toasted on getting up again. Last week I went to two water exercises and plan to go again in the morning if the roads are not iced up. Yes, go to that pool. It is so good for you though vertigo makes water exercise problematic for me.

@BelleStarr First thank you for your honesty and concern. Second, climbing into a high truck is just murder for me. Makes my hip go into hyper scream mode. I have to have the driver pull me up and in. Third, I am working on the why. I think I am working on letting go of my childhood and my ability to do what I could do as a natural act. And can't now. (Can't ride a bike now, either.) Again, thanks.

Well done you! Did they have a mounting block there? That would have made it a lot easier to get on and off.

@JudyEv No mounting block. Just an upended feed bucket. The huge problem was getting off cause I had to put my weight on my bad knee and that just did not work. Finally the horse's owner got her Dad out and he basically hauled me off the horse. Rather mortifying but I got down safely.

@JudyEv Most likely this will be my last ride in a long time. I hate to say never again. I will continue to exercise in the water, though. Are you a rider then?

@sallypup An upended feed bucket isn't very stable. I sometimes used to let the stirrup leather right down so it was easier to get on but that wouldn't help much with a bad knee. Do you intend riding again in the near future?

Very brave of you to do that. I donĀ“t get up on horses either as I have not had the chance although I can hear a couple of horses across the road on the Farm that is there. Again very brave for you to get up there.

@sallypup Yes but its very much closed off which is logical really as there is so little safety and security and anyway its across a big motorway so you cannot get to it unless by car.

That's awesome. How was the ride once you got going or will that be next time? I can't get on a horse anymore without a lot of pain but one our ours knew my knees and legs didn't work well and would be patient when I would climb on her stepping on a stool and to get off, I swung my leg over her mane and slid down holding until I reached the ground. Thankfully, she is only 14 hands 2 inches. I rode her with voice commands. We still have her and she is turning 26 this year. We have five others and a donkey.

@noni1959 I wish I could meet your sweet, short horse. I found it quite frightening, thinking how easy it would be to fall off. I had to have help to get off the very patient horse cause I couldn't put weight on my bonkers knee. I don't see how I can ride a horse again unless somehow my knee suddenly gets better. You have horses and a donkey? How lovely.

@sallypup I grew up with horses and out of my kids, only my youngest daughter became a horse person. Abigail was her first horse I rescued and gave to her when my daughter was only 11 and they've been through so much together in horse shows and just pleasure. I've had many through the years. We keep them for life. We have a draft named Murphy ( the owners were looking for a good home), who is now 17, 18 year old Sorrel quarter named Wiatt (Soup's Nick Pacemaker Wiatt) from Abigail (Answers in Action), 8 year old Lila a quarter rescue, 9 year old Charlie another rescue who lost his eye (we rescued him from abuse and his eye couldn't be saved), 14 year old and again rescued, Fiona who was once a premerine mare and then a bronc and then there is very spoiled Jasmine "Jazzy Pants" our donkey who is about 10. The photo they are in the lower pasture and that's abby having her supplements inside the fencing where they can't get to it.

@sallypup I tried to post a photo but kept getting an internal error. Not sure why. We have six horses and a donkey. At one time we had many more but most get older and pass on. Ours are with us for life.
