Burping In Public

United States

I think most would say that burping in public is rude and nasty. However, I have heard of some people excusing this behavior because they say it is 'natural'. The same with passing gas, they say it is natural and there is nothing wrong with it so it's okay to do it in public. I agree that it is a natural bodily function and we shouldn't be ashamed, but I also believe that there is a time and a place for everything and burping/passing gas in public is simply inappropriate. We need to have manners in public.

sometimes it can't be helped - if we can be discreet about it we should do - I hate how people make a big deal about it when it happens

@MikesAngel317 I know a few people who do it on purpose - really immature behaviour

Of course, accidents happen... but when it's on purpose and being obnoxious that is when I think it is considered inappropriate.

Accidents happen, sure, but some people just don't care and go around burping/passing gas whether someone is around or not. I find it rude if I am walking through the store and someone walks past me letting out a big belch.

There are several things that are "natural" but must not be done in public. Would you pee in public just because "it is natural"?

I've heard from people who travelled to China that the Chinese have no inhibitions regarding bodily functions. The also spit a lot in public. Maybe a Chinese member can comment on this.

That is interesting. Yes, I would also like to hear from a Chinese member on this.

I agree. It should be done when no one else is around out of respect.

It depends a lot on the occasion. If you have to have a respect in public. But between family and home is something very natural.

Burping/passing gas in public is inappropriate. You should know it if you were raised right. Burping/passing gas at the family dinner table, mom's going to correct you. Burping/passing gas in class, teacher's going to correct you. Burping/passing gas on a first date, no correction no second date...
