Shame, last was only my first time to attend birthday debut. So that was really exciting event and have learned many things about it. Birthday debut is a traditional birthday celebration of a young lady who turns into 18 years old-- or the legal age (in my country). It is a grandeur birthday celebration which the lady will turn into a modern Cinderalla wearing a very lovely gown; will walk down the carpeted pathway and will sit in the stage facing the crowds. The birthday girl is called debutante. This is what I learned: debut needs things... ... 18 candles ... 18 bills ... 18 treasures ... 18 wines (which I'm in) ... and 18 roses and dance (mostly started from grandfather, father, brothers, boyfriend, friends and classmates) In my country, when you have celebrated your 18th birthday, there is a saying that you are now legally permitted to have boyfriend. Indeed, the girl has turned into a woman now.

Not too long back where I was born it was until you were 21 years old but you could have a boyfriend at 16. Its nice to have traditions like that.

@ilocosboy I had a boyfriend at sixteen but I suppose if the Father is against it then it must be sort of difficult for the girls specially now. Yes 21 was a coming of age and I think it still sticks in Great Britain even though 18 is official in sorts meaning in a way.

Very nice tradition and still widely practice among the well todo families. Yes, younger generation have already boyfriend at younger age, well they say its illegal because one should be 18 years old, the rule of the father.

I didn't have this grand birthday party when I turned 18. I just had a simple celebration. We are not rich to afford an extravagant birthday

Yeah for us who cannot afford the extravagant debut celebrations we only settle for simple but meaningful birthday celebration.

Yeah, it's true. I have 2 sisters and they both didn't have this celebration. Whatever I know about it, I only got from attending other well-off debut party.

When I was growing up, most people had a celebration when they turned 21. That was the legal 'grown-up' age at that time - for drinking and voting anyway. It was traditional to give the birthday person a symbolic 'key of the door' to show that they were now considered an adult.

Man celebrates his birthday debut when he's 21 years old but comparing to woman's 18th birthday it is lesser in extravagance. The tradition is widely practice by well to-do family because the parents want their child to be real princess even for that day/night alone.

They say that the later you are in the order of rose dance, the more intimate your relationship is with the debutante. The father usually comes first, acting as the gatekeeper and protecting his lovely princess. Next in line are the brothers and other male relatives, with some friends in between. The last rose is usually given by the boyfriend or someone who is very close to the celebrant's heart.

@ilocosboy That could mean that the debutante doesn't have a boyfriend yet, or she is hiding him from her parents :D

I asked my teenage daughter, now 15, where she wants her debut to be held, and she answered me to " just save the money and give it to me " I told her that " we will just have a simple one and give you the money we save" lol

I don't know who influenced us to have this birthday debut, my guess is the Spaniards who colonized our country.

It's supposed to is, you know, usually the father is strict to her daughter and always telling to study first before boyfriend. But kids nowadays cannot wait 18th of age.
