14th January is the date of Sankranti and Pous Parban. Many of these festivals are celebrated for sowing of new crops in the new year. Bengalies during this time make pithe, pathisapta, payes, all with coconuts, jaggery and milk. Tilkut and other food items are prepared. The first crops are even given to God during this time.
